Position: Controller
Job Description:
We are a boutique property management and real estate company located in Vancouver B.C. with over 40 years of experience in the industry.
We specialize in the professional management, leasing and sales of small and large scale commercial properties throughout the lower mainland.
We are looking to add a full-time and experienced Controller that possesses a deep understanding of commercial property accounting, corporate accounting and team leadership and management. The candidate will work closely with both our accounting and property management divisions while overseeing and managing payroll and all corporate accounting affairs of the company.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES - PROPERTY ACCOUNTING
- Manage the financial month-end process, which includes ensuring all transactions are properly recorded, reviewing journal entries, reconciling account balances, and preparing reports
- Contribute to the on-going development of accounting policies, procedures, and operational strategies, including the review and implementation of process and system changes
- Focus on improving system efficiencies and business practices
- Collaborate with external auditors to ensure successful audit results and compliance
- Interact with stakeholders at all levels to produce timely, comprehensive, and accurate financial reporting
- Develop the hierarchy and scalability of each property’s chart of accounts and its accuracy in the general ledger and financial statements; having ultimate authority over classification and booking of all transactions
- Understand all applicable statutory accounting practices and regulations to ensure correct application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
- Act as team lead for best internal reporting practices to prevent fraudulent activity
- Prepare detailed journal entries and account analysis
- Assist with compilation of information for tax return preparation
- Prepare and oversee financial statements variances to annual budget
- Responsible for all strata and non-strata property management accounting portfolios
- Responsible for overseeing full cycle accounting portfolio of each accountant
- Assist senior management in the company's organizational and administration planning matters.
- Direct, oversee and support all accounting staff at Gammon.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES - CORPORATE ACCOUNTING
- Manage and oversee A/R, A/P, journal entries, chargebacks for property expenses, bank reconciliation, and preparation of monthly and annual financial statements
- Coordinate with company auditors for filing corporate returns
- Coordinate and oversee receivable entries for management fees and property chargeback expenses
- Coordinate and oversee payable expenses of the corporation, including payroll, GST filing, payroll deductions, and WCB premiums
- Manage the Trust Account for the corporation
- Prepare budgets for the corporation
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES - PAYROLL
- Update and maintain records of employee profiles for new hires, terminations, or any changes
- Maintain records of all employee leave schedules and entitlement balances
- Manage enrollment of Group Plan Benefits
- Prepare and process semi-monthly payroll and remit source deduction remittance monthly
- Remit Employer Health Tax quarterly and complete annual filing
- Prepare ROE when there is an interruption of earnings
- Prepare annual T4, T4A, and submit annual filing
- Report and pay quarterly WorksafeBC remittance and submit annual filing
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting and/or financial management
- CPA (an asset but not required)
- Canadian Payroll Certification and Membership (an asset but not required)
- Minimum 8 years experience in property accounting and corporate accounting with local BC companies
- Minimum 8 years experience in directly managing staff, whether a direct individual supervisor or a department
- Has a superior ability to lead, manage and mentor staff
- Possesses clear and articulate leadership skills in any internal and external capacity
- Understands and possesses experience in technology and the demand for a digital platform
- Friendly, approachable, patient and well-mannered
