Position Summary
The Food Technologist ensures all lab related activities are carried out in a timely manner to contribute to pipeline growth. Owns and leads all R&D projects, application development, technical support initiatives, and training. Generates and maintains specifications, customer facing presentations, and a technical library. Works closely with Sales, Quality, Supply Chain, Suppliers, and Customers.
Duties
- Conduct research and development of new food products, including formulation, testing, and evaluation.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure product quality, safety, and regulatory compliance.
- Analyze ingredient functionality and assess the impact on product texture, flavor, and shelf life.
- Perform sensory evaluations and consumer testing to gather feedback on product acceptability.
- Document findings and prepare reports on product development processes and outcomes.
- Stay updated with industry trends, technological advancements, and regulatory changes affecting food products.
- Assist in troubleshooting production issues related to product formulations or processes.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and execute lab initiatives including but not limited to product feasibility trials, color matching, analytical assessments, and product optimization.
- Support sample coordination to ensure deadlines and priorities and maintained.
- Generate and maintain an organized and accessible library of technical content to support the lab and business.
- Build and manage a library of applications and generate prototypes/samples to support business as needed (trade shows, customer demos, marketing collateral, etc.)
- Maintain in-depth knowledge of products and act as a technical resource for sales team to assist in solving technical questions for customers.
- Provide support for any internal or external food safety or quality issues and customer complaints.
- Represent the company on customer calls and industry trades shows.
- Work with QA to approve any new equipment, ingredients, or suppliers.
- Draft technical materials and specification sheets for products.
- Stay abreast on related industry updates (regulatory, technical, competitors, etc.) by reviewing newsletters, articles, and networking, distributing updates accordingly.
- Other duties as assigned
- Able to lift up to 25 lbs.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required in Food Science, Food Technology, Food Engineering, or a related field
- 3-5 years’ experience in food industry with at least 2 years in R&D.
- Demonstrated experience with hands-on food and/or beverage ingredients and analytical testing in an R&D setting.
- Knowledge of food colors, common food processes, food ingredient functionality, and ingredient interactions.
- Excellent verbal and written communications with strong presentation skills
- Proficiency in using MS Office Programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Ability to prioritize and manage a workload with varying priorities while working within deadlines.
- Experience with NetSuite a plus.
- Ability to travel up to 10% of the time to visit customers and attend conferences and trade events.
