Job Description:
As an Excavator Operator with PFM Construction, you will be responsible for excavating and backfilling trenches for installation of various types of underground utilities. You will ensure that all trenches are excavated and backfilled according to local and municipal specifications, at the correct grade and elevation. This role requires a high level of attention to detail, strong safety practices, and effective communication skills.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate a variety of heavy equipment including Excavators, Loaders, Backhoes, Skid Steers, and Rollers with confidence and precision.
- Perform tasks such as digging excavations, trenching for utilities, crossing/exposing utilities, loading and off-loading materials, backfilling trenches, and prepping for grade.
- Conduct daily greasing and inspection of equipment, ensuring all machinery is in proper working order.
- Report any required maintenance or repairs to ensure safe operation.
- Maintain high standards of work quality and elevate the skills of the team by setting a positive example.
- Work closely with Field Supervisors and crew, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.
- Uphold safety protocols on PFM Construction and client job sites, participating actively in all safety meetings.
Skills & Attributes:
- 3 to 5 years of experience in utility construction, with a preference for those familiar with working around existing utilities.
- Proven experience operating 20-30 ton excavators, with additional skills in operating backhoes, dozers, or loaders considered an asset.
- Strong understanding of safe work practices and ability to work in tight urban environments, including around live utilities.
- Familiarity with GPS systems and the ability to cut slope, trench, or grade to finish tolerance is an asset.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to identify mechanical or safety issues with equipment.
- Effective communication skills with the ability to work well in a team environment.
- High attention to detail and a strong desire to provide high-quality workmanship.
- Problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and address issues proactively.
- Physically capable of lifting a minimum of 50 pounds.
- Willingness to work 5 to 6 days a week, 8+ hours per day, including extended hours as needed.
- Ability to commute to various job site locations in the Lower Mainland.
