The Dr. Peter Centre (DPC) provides compassionate HIV care for people living with significant health issues including mental illness, trauma, substance use, unstable housing and poverty.
Through its day health, 24-hour care residence and enhanced supportive housing programs, the DPC provides healthy meals, counselling, therapies, nursing, and a safe place for peer socialization and support. Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Day Health Coordinator, the Counsellor, as a member of a multidisciplinary team, is responsible for providing brief, supportive and ongoing counselling to participants in the Day Health Program, Residence, and the Enhanced Supportive Housing Program.
Key Responsibilities
The Counsellor is responsible for:
- Providing brief therapy, supportive counselling and ongoing counselling and group counselling to participants in the Day Health Program;
- Assessing individual and group needs and planning the relevant counselling interventions including grief and loss counselling, trauma counselling and addiction counselling;
- Assisting in the assessment of referrals and new admissions;
- Assisting in the orientation of new participants;
- Participating as an active member of the clinical team member including supporting general program activities and environment monitoring as assigned;
- Facilitating connection with community services and service providers for community referrals and on discharge from program;
- Collaborating with other team members and external health and social providers in developing plans;
- Documenting significant interventions and contacts; and
- Other related duties including assignment in Day Health, Enhanced Supportive Housing and Residence programs.
Education, Qualifications and Experience
The preferred education, qualifications, and experience of the Counsellor are:
- Preferred Masters’ Degree in Social Work, Counselling Psychology or related discipline;
- Minimum three years’ experience in providing counselling or life skill support for individuals with co-existing health issues, specifically HIV, addiction and mental illness;
- Knowledge and experience in addiction and trauma counselling; and
- Current CPR/ AED certification – level C.
General Working Conditions
This is a temporary full-time, Tuesday to Saturday (six-month contract) position with an hourly pay rate range of $42.27 - $52.81. This position requires flexibility and the ability to prioritize workload, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment where demands and deadlines may change with short notice. Multitasking and flexibility are a must in order to meet deadlines, and to support many operational functions/activities that may occur concurrently or without notice. An understanding of the importance of maintaining the confidentiality of sensitive employee/client information is necessary.
