University Health Network (UHN) is looking for an experienced professional to fill the key role of Communications Assistant (Public Affairs Associate) in the KITE Research Institute.

The successful candidate must have proficiency and enjoyment of social media and web content management with a view to creating digital-first stories that drive brand awareness. Enjoy connecting with people, helping share their stories, and be an enthusiastic content creator, using video and design/graphic tools that support social platforms and are available to the larger UHN. The ability to respond with tact and kindness, in stressful situations, along with the desire to work with a wide range of individuals with a diversity of communications needs. The ability to act quickly and correctly, synthesize and share information will also be a great asset.
This position reports to the Director, KITE Research Operations and works very closely with the Team Lead, Public Affairs and Communication Senior Public Affairs Advisor. The successful candidate is a strong multi-platform storyteller with experience in video production and graphic design. The position requires someone who is diplomatic, flexible, quick-thinking and able to adjust to rapidly changing situations. The candidate also possesses the ability to understand complex content and translate it into easy-to-read content will be important.
Responsibilities for the role include:
managing the KITE’s web content and family of social media platforms (KITE, CRANIA, FIBRE, etc.), including but not solely, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn; collecting data from social media platforms; supporting video shooting and editing; working collaboratively on KITE Strategic Initiatives; working collaboratively with the UHN Foundation on marketing projects and events; supporting KITE researchers in highlighting their significant clinical, academic, and scientific achievements, both internally and externally; researching and writing newsletter and reports; collaborating with subject matter experts to create and adapt content; negotiating content changes with authors, expert reviewers and stakeholders; working with the media on both proactive and reactive calls; other duties as required.
- Undergraduate Degree and/or Post-graduate Certificate in journalism, communications or other recognized equivalent
- Minimum 1-3 years practical and related experience
- In depth writing, editing and verbal communications skills required
- Well versed in public relations practices, particularly in the areas of: strategic communications, internal and community relations, special events management and media relations
- Skills and interest in video development/production (ie. Filming and editing)
- Excellent organizational, time management and project management skills required
- Evidence of writing, editing and verbal communications skills are required
- Computer literacy required (preferably Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, desktop publishing, Adobe Creative Suite)
- Ability to establish solid working relationships with staff, researchers and trainees at all levels is required
- Some knowledge and experience working with the media is desirable
- Experience with website content management systems is an asset
- Experience in an academic setting or complex, large institution is desirable
- Strong tactical and good critical strategic thinking
- Ability to handle ambiguity and rapid change
- Excellent problem solving abilities with attention to detail
- Ability to write to a range of audiences – patients, family members, medical professionals, students, researchers, philanthropists,
- Experience with Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc.
- Strong graphic design skills
- Strong video shooting and editing abilities
