Peer Support Worker Job Description
Job Title: Youth or Family Peer Support Worker

Job Summary: To provide peer support services virtually as part of a multi-disciplinary team to youth (11-25) with mental illness and/or substance use concerns or their caregivers (parents, family members, supportive adults). Service provision will focus on working with clients to enhance their recovery. Services could include walk-in or same-day individual sessions, delivery of support groups, delivery of educational groups, and social/recreational/community-based activities with peers. This role will report [insert role/title here of supervisor at your site].
Specific Duties:
1. To provide individual same-day/walk-in peer support sessions on-site and virtually for those interested in services.
2. To provide support for service users when they try to access personal and community resources.
3. Assist in developing formal and informal community supports and programming after consulting with stakeholders.
4. Assist service users in increasing social support networks of relatives, friends, and/or significant others.
5. To work collaboratively as a part of a multidisciplinary team.
6. To advocate with persons who have mental health or substance use concerns to protect their rights and to assist in reducing associated stigma.
7. To work in cooperation with other providers, family members or significant others involved in the service users' self-directed recovery plan.
8. To attend mandatory Peer Support Community of Practice, organizational meetings, and supervision as advised.
9. To attain established standards of productivity.
10. To observe all rules of confidentiality relating to clinical information and treatment contained in the Health Information Act, both internally and when dealing with external agencies and/or individuals.
11. To be responsible for understanding service users' rights and all policies and procedures relating to them.
12. To participate in staff training and development.
13. To maintain professional standards at all times. To observe the guidelines established within the Code of Ethics and Conduct.
14. To perform other related duties as assigned including cleaning and social media.
Employment Qualifications
Education: Verification of attendance of a peer support training program or attendance of Kickstand’s peer support training program after being hired
Experience: Past or present lived experience of mental health or substance abuse concerns as a youth (11-25) and has previously accessed services personally for support in the mental health or substance use sector. Previous experience of comfortably sharing personal mental health-related lived experience and history of setting boundaries with lived experience. A history of managing one's own mental health or substance use concerns successfully. Awareness of the importance of hope and recovery in living with mental health or substance use concerns. Previous experience in a peer support role, developing community-based programming, or facilitating mental health-related groups is considered an asset.
Skills: Ability to work well with others, familiarity with remote work and video conferencing software, ability to interact with various types of people, a sound understanding of mental health and/or substance use concerns and treatments, ability to develop community-based programming, and ability to facilitate mental health-related groups. Personal traits which include: patience, tolerance, caring, and understanding.
Licensure: Not required.
Pay: $21.00-$25.00 per hour
