The Robarts Research Institute within the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University has a mission to accelerate medical discovery. Through a powerful integration of basic and clinical research, we drive major advances that impact on many of today's most devastating diseases.

The mission of Dr. Everling's research is to determine how the primate frontal cortex converts internal states into deliberate action, combining chemogenetics, high-density electrophysiology, and ultra-high-field fMRI in the marmoset to establish causal, circuit-level mechanisms of cognitive control and vocal communication.

Responsibilities

The Research Technician will work under the direction of a Principal Investigator, and in collaboration with postdoctoral scholars and students, to prepare and conduct experiments and techniques to support whole-brain tissue processing, immunolabelling, three-dimensional imaging, and image analysis of non-human primate brain tissue, following set protocols and procedures in a research facility. The Research Technician will conduct SHIELD tissue preservation and delipidation and optical clearing using the LifeCanvas Radiant SmartBatch+ systems. The role will run multiplex immunofluorescence and imaging with confocal, widefield, and Miltenyi Ultramicroscope Blaze II light-sheet microscopes. The Research Technician will conduct data conversion, stitching, visualization, and analysis using specialized software and prepare reports as required.

Qualifications

Education:

4 year university bachelor's degree in Biology, Biomedical Sciences or relevant discipline
Master’s degree preferred

Experience:

1 year of experience working in a research-intensive laboratory environment including demonstrated experience with SHIELD tissue preservation, LifeCanvas and SmartBatch+ systems, confocal and widefield microscopy, and immunofluorescence in non-human primate tissue
Experience with multiplex immunolabelling, light-sheet microscopy, and the processing and analysis of large three-dimensional imaging datasets using specialized software (such as Miltenyi Imaging Software and Imaris)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Familiarity with methods for research design, implementation, and analysis
Familiarity with techniques for updating, managing and extracting data from a research database
Familiarity with preventative maintenance techniques and practices
Communication skills with an ability to complete detailed analytics and reports
Ability to apply critical thinking to evaluate information and make appropriate decisions or recommendations
Attention to detail with an ability to retrieve, analyze and synthesize sizable amounts of data, while ensuring that information is accurate and comprehensive
Ability to follow formal processes and protocols with high attention to detail
Ability to employ a systematic and efficient approach to work
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet tight deadlines and adapt to changing priorities
Computer skills with the ability to learn and use software programs
Excellent troubleshooting ability along with hands-on expertise in technical support
Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite and with research software (Miltenyi Imaging Software and Imaris)
Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public
Ability to identify key results from research and to summarize and draft reports on research findings
Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
Familiarity with University policies and procedures related to research preferred
