Job Description:
Bear River First Nation has spent the past several years developing oyster farming operations in the Annapolis Basin, NS. Work conducted to date includes the design and deployment of the infrastructure required to operate in the high energy environment of the Basin and gathering of growth / mortality data. The next phase of the project involves building out the farm to pre-commercial scale which involves the production of 2 million oysters. The Manager would be responsible for directing a staff of four to six workers to ensure all aspects of oyster farm operations are being carried out (eg. flipping, tumbling / grading, plankton tows, maintenance, etc).
This is a full time, permanent position with excellent growth potential. Once the pre-commercial phase is complete, the next phase will involve full commercialization with the goal of gradually working toward 15 million annual production within a fully vertically integrated operation.
The Manager would be expected to have competency in the following areas and would ensure labourers are meeting these industry standards:
- How to accurately measure and fill seed into oyster bags and deploy them to cages / lease.
- How to monitor for biofouling risk and stay ahead of biofouling through air drying and tumbling.
- How to harvest market sized oysters and restock inventory using appropriate equipment and techniques.
- How to monitor oyster growth and health.
- Raise and sink gear in accordance with industry standards.
- Aid in repairing gear as needed both on land and on water.
- Take direction from Executive and pass that direction on to staff.
- Maintain a clean/organized site and ensure all equipment is maintained on a regular basis.
- Develop standard operating procedures and ensure staff are trained and following the SOPs.
Requirements:
- Minimum two years working on an oyster farm(s).
- Strong communication and human resource management skills.
- Competency in MS Office, notably Word, Excel and Outlook.

Pay: $25.00-$30.00 per hour
Expected hours: 30 – 40 per week
