Martyrs’ Shrine is currently recruiting for a Programme Leader, a permanent full-time position, to complement our dynamic team:
The Programme Leader is a personable, energized, dynamic, and faith-filled person who lives a flexible work/life schedule in their comprehensive role organizing, and executing pilgrimages, programmes, and initiatives for the National Shrine. They achieve this by maintaining contact with group leaders, or participants by telephone and email, effectively communicating information to the appropriate parties (both internal and external) using the tools at their disposal, ensuring that the internal resources are deployed accordingly, and that the Sacristy is cared for appropriately. The Programme Leader is comfortable with learning and using technologies to facilitate their work, and exudes confidence while presenting to groups of size ranging from a couple people, to crowds of thousands of people, diverse in socio-cultural identity and age. They are supported by a team of direct reports, guidance and assistance from the Senior Staff team, as well as by the supervision and leadership of the Chief of Staff.
In collaboration with the Jesuit Fathers, facilitates Martyrs’ Shrine youth retreats and educational programming. Leads the booking, preparation, execution, and closure of the different cultural pilgrimages, programmes, retreats and group bookings, and prepares the programme schedule for the Jesuits on staff. Leads socio-cultural tours of Martyrs’ Shrine for tour companies as required, contributes to website by authoring pastoral content, and ensures the proper functioning of the Sacristy.
The lead of the Programme team, facilitates the completion of required tasks and achievement of departmental goals. Supports effective teamwork within the Programme team, ensuring that the team works collaboratively and effectively with other departments, using clear and effective communication. Co-ordinates with the Department of Marketing and Communications with regards to promotion related to programme initiatives. Provides and/or presents reports to the Chief of Staff /Senior Staff.
Relationship Management/Partnership & Alliance Building
Proactively communicates with the Chief of Staff, members of the Programme team and supports positive interdepartmental relations across the organization. Develops positive relationships with all visitors participating in Martyrs’ Shrine programmes, retreats, and pilgrimages. Acts as an ambassador for Martyrs’ Shrine, and represents the organization in a manner that ensures a positive spiritual experience for all visitors at Martyrs’ Shrine in keeping with its Mission, Vision, and Values.
Remains current regarding best-practices in developing and executing youth-oriented spiritual programmes. Adapts programme delivery in accordance with up-to-date guidance from the Roman Catholic faith. Identifies opportunities for the continuous improvement of work processes and procedures, and contributes to team problem-solving and results-improvement initiatives.
Leads the Programme team (including those in Seminary Programmes and Field Placements), in the developed programmes, pilgrimages, and scheduled pilgrim visits. Assist the Chief of Staff in writing and conducting staff performance evaluations. Bring any Human Resources issues to the Chief of Staff for discussion and action. Actively participates in the hiring of the Programme staff team.
First point of contact for all Programme bookings. Maintains constant communication with groups through phone and email, provides accurate recordkeeping with the maintenance of a bookings database, provides data entry services as required, and maintains files related to Programme and Sacristy needs. Responsible for creating the monthly ministries schedule for the Jesuits and Programme staff schedule with assistance as needed from the Director and Chief of Staff.
Works in collaboration with the Chief of Staff and Comptroller to complete the ordering and purchasing for the Programmes Department, following all financial procedures and policies set by the Apostolate. Assists the Chief of Staff and Comptroller in the preparation and execution of the annual Programmes budget. Is accountable for ensuring all purchasing is within budget.
Contributes to programme development, modification and delivery, which is appropriate to the community base, sensitive to the needs of the visitors to Martyrs’ Shrine, and consistent with organizational and spiritual objectives. Supports the faith formation of all programme participants and visitors. Co-ordinates the preparation of Roman Catholic liturgies (i.e. Mass, Eucharistic adoration, prayer services, etc.) executed by Martyrs’ Shrine. Assists the Jesuits and Senior Staff in ensuring a prayerful, reflective, and welcoming atmosphere for pilgrims.
Bachelor degree in Sacred Theology/Master of Divinity, Master of Ministry (or equivalent), or Bachelor of Education with a focus on Catholic Education. Two (2) to five (5) years’ experience in Roman Catholic Pastoral/Youth Ministry (i.e. Parish Ministry, Youth Net, World Youth Days, Hearts on Fire Programme, Kyros Retreat Animation, etc.), combined with competent knowledge of Roman Catholic theology and liturgical norms.
Pastoral sensitivity in presenting and comfort with integrating themes from the lives of saints with theological and historical ideas that address the simple and/or complex pastoral needs of children, students, and adults. An awareness of Ignatian Spirituality combined with a working knowledge of the history of the Canadian Martyrs and the Martyrs’ Shrine, or a willingness to be trained in this area of early-modern Canadian history.
Must be comfortable speaking with groups of various sizes, and ages, especially with regards to facilitating programmes for youth. Must be able to be flexible and adaptable to circumstances based on mood and climate of a group under facilitation, and have an active faith-life.
Proficient in computer use, and comfortable learning new software.
Additional assets for the position include:
- Bilingual English and French and/or other languages;
- Musical talent (i.e. vocal/instrumental).
The standard work week is 37.5 hours. Regular weekend schedule, working all weekends May to October, including statutory holidays. Required to have flexibility to meet the needs of the organization including last minute requests. Must be willing to work outside and able to fulfill the regular physical requirements of the position.

- Sitting and standing for long periods of time, walking long distances, sometimes uphill, and sometimes alongside moving traffic, on-site multiple times a day
- Requires working both indoors and outdoors, in summer weather, for extended periods of time
- Requires attention to detail, and focus, under high-stress circumstances with multiple distractions and interruptions
- Ability to communicate, with clear speech and good hearing, using two-way radios
- Ability to remain alert to by listening for, and watching for, safety hazards around you and others
As a condition of employment, must complete a criminal background check including vulnerable sector screening, and have a valid Ontario Driver’s License.
