This team is responsible for overseeing the development and maintenance of Transmission standards for lines, substations, and telecom systems used throughout the ATCO Electric transmission system. This includes standard drawings, material specifications, maintenance standards, design standards, and hardware assembly standards as well as driving innovation in material and standard design. They also provide engineering support related to standards to numerous groups with ATCO.
We are looking for a self-motivated Senior Engineer to join us in the exciting work we do at ATCO Electric. Reporting to the Supervising Engineer, Transmission Standards, this position is responsible for the development and change management of engineering standards, specifications, templates, and base drawings for substation primary disciplines of medium & high voltage apparatus as well as station electrical design, layout, civil and structural engineering.
This position will also lead the group in developing and piloting technical initiatives and innovation projects and identifying areas of improvement to cost, risk, performance, and reliability.
Responsibilities:
- Create, update, review, approve, publish, and take professional responsibility for the accuracy and applicable code compliance of all changes to engineering & maintenance standards as well as base drawings, quality assurance of specifications for material, equipment, and prefabricated structural modules.
- Support inventory and procurement by standardizing and specifying common materials to be bulk purchased, stored, and consumed by project construction right through its maintenance and replacement.
- Facilitate, lead, and research into standard & specification issues including peer reviews, compliance to codes & regulations, changes to technology including vendor equipment & hardware offerings.
- Collaborate with the Operations Engineering team in post incident investigation and condition assessments into structural and equipment failures affecting SAIFI/CAIDI to identify root causes, prudent remedial and preventative measures.
- Support the standardization of innovative technology and product developments to enhance engineering and maintenance standards, including networking with vendors, promoting innovation, and executing pilot projects for development of new standards and products.
- Assess and compare new substation apparatus (power transformers, circuit breakers, switches, instrument transformers, capacitors, and reactors), hardware, connectors and accessories from a performance and operational perspective. Document the technical analysis and recommendations along with their business drivers, life cycle cost benefits, and measures of success.
- Investigate maintenance requirements of new and existing equipment to develop maintenance standards based on manufacturer’s recommendations and performance-based reliability metrics.
- Manage and maintain relationships with Engineering, Asset Management, and Reliability teams with a focus on engagement with field-based construction, operations, and maintenance teams.
- Serve as owner’s engineer and manage the contract for relevant outsourced work.
- Mentor and develop technical & professional skills within the Standards & Reliability team members.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited University.
- Professional Engineer registered or eligible for registration with APEGA.
- At least seven years of substation apparatus, and electrical layout engineering experience, preferably in an electrical utility environment.
- In-depth knowledge of substation apparatus specifications, electrical layout design codes and utility standards.
- Experience with drafting software such MicroStation or AutoCAD is desired.
- Superior interpersonal skills with strong written and verbal communication abilities to effectively interact with internal and external customers.
- Independently research, learn, and stay current on rapidly changing technologies and products.
- Ability to arrive at pragmatic solutions to standard issues that represent the best engineered solution from the perspective of cost, risk, performance, and reliability.
- A valid Alberta driver's licence (Class 5).
- Candidates with less experience may be considered as Engineer, Transmission Standards.
