The Collector is responsible for contacting consumers to recover outstanding debts on behalf of our clients. This role involves negotiating payment arrangements, assessing accounts for legal referral, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring full compliance with all applicable federal and provincial collection legislation.
Key Responsibilities:
Collections & Negotiation
- Contact consumers via telephone, email, and written correspondence to negotiate and recover outstanding balances
- Negotiate payment plans, lump-sum settlements, and other payment arrangements within client-approved guidelines
- Handle inbound calls from consumers and respond to inquiries in a professional and timely manner
- Meet or exceed monthly and quarterly collection targets and key performance indicators (KPIs)
- Manage a high volume of accounts and prioritize workload effectively
Account Management & Documentation
- Maintain thorough and accurate documentation of all collection activities, consumer communications, and account updates in the agency's collection software system
- Review account documentation including contracts, statements, invoices, and credit agreements
- Conduct skip tracing to locate consumers using available databases, credit bureaus, and other approved tools
- Update consumers information including contact details, employment, and financial status
Legal Referral & Support
- Assess and identify accounts suitable for referral to legal counsel for litigation
- Coordinate with legal partners and internal teams on accounts referred for legal action, including lawsuits, garnishments, and judgment enforcement
- Monitor and follow up on accounts in legal status and update records accordingly
- Assist with post-judgment collection efforts
Qualifications:
- Previous collections experience – up to 2 years;
- Some experience with collecting for financial institutions is an asset;
- Deadline and performance driven;
- Ability to negotiate in a tactful and diplomatic manner using superior oral and written communication skills;
- Team player with great people skills showing an ability to work in a team environment as well as independently;
- Proven sense of urgency with the ability to shift priorities as necessary.
