Reporting to the Coordinator, Animal Care and Programs, the Department Supervisor, Farm Animal Care and Programs plays a key role in supporting daily operations within the farm animal barn at Mountsberg Conservation Area. This hands-on leadership position combines animal care, staff supervision, and program delivery. The successful candidate will act as a working lead—mentoring seasonal staff, coordinating daily activities, and ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare, safety, and guest experience.
- Support daily operations of the farm animal barn, ensuring high-quality animal care and program delivery
- Provide frontline supervision, task assignment, and coaching to seasonal staff during shifts
- Act as a peer trainer and subject matter resource for animal care and educational programs
- Assist with the care and management of farm animals and education snakes
- Deliver engaging, educational programs for guests, school groups, and the public
- Operate equipment safely, including tractors and horse-drawn wagons for visitor experiences
- Maintain inventories of feed, supplies, and equipment; support facility and paddock upkeep
- Monitor and uphold health and safety standards, reporting hazards and incidents as required
- Provide exceptional customer service and handle guest inquiries, concerns, and day-to-day issues
- Contribute to continuous improvement of programming and operational practices
- Work in accordance with the Conservation Halton’s Safety Policies & Procedures and the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and all other related manuals.
- Secondary school diploma required; post-secondary education in Animal Care, Animal Behaviour, or a related field preferred
- Minimum 3 years of experience caring for farm animals and snakes
- 2–3 years of experience handling and driving horses (draft horse experience preferred)
- Previous supervisory or team lead experience (1–2 years preferred)
- Strong knowledge of farm animal and reptile care practices
- Familiarity with positive reinforcement training and operant conditioning principles
- Experience operating farm equipment (e.g., tractors, power tools, manure spreaders)
- Commitment to safety, animal welfare, and high-quality guest experiences
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment
- Strong leadership and coaching skills with the ability to mentor and support staff
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a customer-focused approach
- Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to multitask, prioritize effectively, and adapt to changing operational needs
- Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, on varied terrain
- Able to lift up to 40 pounds, stand, and walk for long periods of time
- Successful candidates are required to provide a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSS) , to verify the absence of a criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted (if over 18 years old). *Cost covered by Conservation Halton up to $30.00.
- A valid Ontario Drivers Licence, minimum Class “G ”, with a satisfactory Driver’s Abstract is required. *Abstract completed by Conservation Halton.
- Standard First Aid and CPR certification is an asset
- Starting at $53,036 annually based on a 40-hour work week.
