Overview
Under the direction of the Indigenous Justice Manager, the Indigenous Liaison Officer will assist inmates serving terms of imprisonment in their successful reintegration into the community by providing culturally relevant programs, services and activities aimed at promoting Indigenous Healing and Wellness. The successful candidate will provide culturally safe, one-on-one support, advocacy, programming, and community outreach. This individual will work collaboratively with correctional staff, Elders, community partners, and families.
Key Responsibilities:
· Act as a liaison between Indigenous inmates, families, institutional staff, probation and parole, Elders, knowledge keepers, Indigenous community corrections workers, and community service providers
· Develop and facilitate regular Indigenous cultural, social, and spiritual programming
· Meet with Indigenous inmates upon admission to explain available supports and services
· Assist with release planning, temporary absence plans, and community reintegration
· Establish community partnerships and volunteer involvement
· Maintain intake forms, client records, statistics, and reports
· Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
· Post-secondary degree/diploma in Social or Human Services or equivalent experience
· Knowledge of Indigenous culture and spirituality
· Experience providing one-on-one support to Indigenous men
· Experience facilitating programs and teaching skills
· Knowledge of correctional environments
· Strong communication, organization, computer, and time management skills
· Comfortability and confidence working within a Correctional Facility
· Able to maintain accurate records and documentation.
Requirements and Contract Information:
· Criminal Record Check (required)
· Valid driver's license and regular access to a reliable vehicle
· Location: West Coast Correctional Centre and NAWN’s Indigenous Justice Program Office
· Hours: 28 hours/week (4 days/week)
· Rate of Pay: $30.00/hour
