At SMS Equipment, our Sustainability Program Manager is responsible for defining, refining and managing the Sustainability Program strategy. This role will build upon the existing framework and seek to incorporate new, innovative approaches. The Sustainability Program Manager is to be also responsible for evaluating and adapting process and developing initiatives that align with SMS Equipment values and advance the business strategy.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Define, refine and manage SMS Equipment’s Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy and lead ESG initiatives, including sustainability definition, commitments and targets. Develop ESG standards, key performance indicators assessments, and audit best practices to ensure compliance with legislation and industry practice. Develop and execute tracking strategy for emerging and proposed sustainability related legislation and regulations.
Coordinate and drive alignment on sustainability-related issues across businesses, functions and regions. Consistently seek out and benchmark against best practices globally; not only within the heavy equipment industry, but also among best-in-class organizations. Support community relations and public affairs programs and be an ambassador for SMS Equipment’s sustainability programs.
Work with various internal stakeholders to evaluate and incorporate sustainable solutions. Provide support to stakeholders to assess, develop and build community engagement practices. Provide sustainability guidance to internal stakeholders and ensure implementation of the strategy meet business needs and align with corporate policies.
Administrative. Keep current with all federal, provincial and local environmental legal requirements and industry standards and provide recommendations on substantial changed and compliance to the CHRO. Plan and coordinate and effective meetings and facilitated group sessions. Be a visible role model of a high-performing, continuous improvement culture and mindset.

Qualifications include:
The successful incumbent will have obtained a bachelor’s degree in Business, Legal, Environmental or Earth Science, Communications or related discipline. This role requires a minimum of 5+ years’ experience in project or consulting style of work in roles connected to measurement and performance topics or dedicated experience from ESG work or related transferable experience.

Experience in developing ESG related programs, including strategy and framework development and implementation, such as recognized ESG/sustainability frameworks and standards (SASB, TCFD, GRI, WEF, CDP, SYP Global CSA or similar)
Experience working with operations through a corporate function, including ability to understand how ESG and sustainability impacts business models
Working knowledge of federal, provincial, and municipal environmental laws
Qualitative analysis, research and business case development
Experience in key areas such as project management, management systems, stakeholder relations, compliance, auditing, due diligence.
Plan, organize and complete activities on multiple small-, medium-, and large-scale projects concurrently and in a timely manner, balancing detailed tasks with the priorities and pressures of the broader, macro environment, while maintaining thorough and detailed project documentation
Ability to research and synthesize technical and non-technical information into concise, engaging and easy to understand language in multiple formats depending on audience; particularly written communication
Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of products (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint/Teams). At SMS Equipment, safety is our number one priority. Our successful candidate is intrinsically motivated and committed to making safe choices, when completing all tasks.
