SAIT Facilities Management (FM) supports our core academic businesses by maintaining safe, up-to-date campus environments and inviting public spaces. Our facilities include 23 buildings, residences, satellite campuses and leased spaces, totaling over 5,000,000 square feet hosting up to 50,000 visitors a day. FM ensures the functionality and environmental comfort of the SAIT community by coordinating people, places, processes and technology. This department specializes in maintenance, operations, renovations, planning and design, security and emergency services, and safety and wellness.
We are currently recruiting for two full time Peace Officers as part of our new Peace Officer program at SAIT. You will be a service-orientated individual who will be responsible for coordinating responses to many different situations and will assist the Incident Commander during any serious incident that requires the activation of the SAIT Emergency Operations Centre.

You will be part of a team; however, you will be required to work independently for a most your shift. You will be required to understand and work within the operational guidelines dictated by SAIT and the office of Security & Emergency Services while experiencing a very dynamic work environment with high stress factors, year round weather conditions and moderate physical demands. You will be continually interacting with the SAIT community, including but not limited to advising and providing support to students, staff and guests on security and safety matters.
This position will obtain peace officer status while employed at SAIT for the purpose of discretionary enforcement of designated provincial and city legislations. Additionally due to the nature of the position, you will be required to work ten (10) hour day and/or afternoon shifts on a rotating schedule and a valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License is mandatory.

Job Description

Proactive patrol and directed patrol duties
Monitor and attend to calls for service related to Provincial and City of Calgary legislations.
Respond, monitor, assess, record and respond appropriately to all safety and security related services on campus
Act as the point of contact for the Security team and function as the central communications link for the team as well as with external agencies
Respond to all emergency calls that include Monitoring, Assessing and Recording the events as the unfold
Answer public queries and educate the SAIT Community on safety and security issues.
Respond to calls for service including safe walks and security escorts, emergency responders on site assistance, such as police, fire and EMS
Provide static security when required, assist the SAIT Student Union with their safewalk program and be available via radio to their volunteers, provide testimony to the Office of the SAIT Registrar and/or the Provincial courts or the Court of Queen's bench as requested/subpoenaed.
Provide emergency response to all on-campus incidents, including those at the student residences
Act as a key link to the dispatch center to recommend required resources
Assume command of all major incidents until relieved. This may include managing and directing responding resources including emergency personnel.

Qualifications

Certification in a continuing education law enforcement program, an emergency management program, or an advanced police leadership training program from the Canadian Police College or a recognized law enforcement agency.
Must have a minimum of 4 years progressively responsible law enforcement experience or an equivalence in Emergency Management positions, including 3 years of supervisory and/or management experience.
Education and experience equivalencies will be considered.
The flexibility to work ten (10) hour shifts on a rotating schedule
A valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License (candidates must provide a recent positive driver’s abstract)
Criminal background check with Vulnerable Sector Check

Training/Certifications Required:
Incident Command System 100 training
Advanced computer skills are required, with a good understanding of various computer software programs such as Microsoft Outlook and Word.
First AID and CPR Level 2
Use of Force ( includes Baton, Pepper spray and Handcuffing certification)
Non-Violent Crisis Intervention

Additional skills required:
Superior service orientation skillset to build relationships
Work as a team and independently
Knowledge of CCTV, Access Control and Fire Alarm Systems
Knowledge of relevant Federal, Provincial and Municipal laws and bi-laws
Attention to detail, decision-making, and appropriate judgement are required to ensure the safety of the SAIT community
Multi-tasking and responsible decision making
Excellent communication skills including reading, verbal and written
The ability to stand and/or walk for prolonged periods of time
The ability to climb flights of stairs, as well as exposure to seasonal outdoor conditions unpredictable and emergency situations and possible exposure to biohazards and bloodborne pathogens
