Reporting directly to the Operations Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of the landfill site's infrastructure and services. The Field Operations Specialist is a hands-on technical role responsible for operations, maintenance and upgrading of the landfill’s primary infrastructure, including leachate collection and pumping, surface water ponds, landfill gas collection odour control, controls such as SCADA/PLC, and related systems. You will work closely with internal teams, partners and third-party contractors to operate, monitor and maintain system performance, troubleshoot issues, interpret operational data, and implement practical solutions that improve reliability, compliance, and environmental performance, while also supporting waste operations, and execute continuous improvement initiatives.
Oversee the operation, maintenance, and performance of site infrastructure and systems, including leachate collection and pumping systems, odour control systems, surface water management infrastructure, landfill gas collection systems, and related field equipment.
Operate, monitor, troubleshoot, and support the maintenance of pumps, pumping systems, controls, and associated equipment to ensure reliable and efficient site operations.
Monitor and manage SCADA and PLC-based control systems, including reviewing system data, identifying alarms or operational issues, troubleshooting equipment and controls, and coordinating repairs or technical support as required.
Monitor leachate levels, pumping rates, and system performance; analyze pumping data to support regulatory compliance, odour control, and overall operational performance.
Work collaboratively with our landfill gas partners and contractors to support the operation and performance of the landfill gas collection system and wellfield from a landfill operations perspective. Review and understand gas quality and quantity data, identify operational or odour-related concerns, support troubleshooting and mitigation efforts, and coordinate with the contractor to implement wellfield or site operational adjustments as required.
Monitor and maintain surface water management systems, including drainage infrastructure, collection systems, pumps, ponds, and related field infrastructure, and identify and address potential operational or compliance issues.
Conduct hands-on field work, troubleshooting, inspections, measurements, and routine maintenance activities across the landfill and associated infrastructure.
Conduct and document regular site inspections in accordance with the Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA), applicable legislation, regulatory requirements, and company procedures.
Investigate, develop, and implement odour mitigation strategies, including operational improvements, infrastructure upgrades, and field-based mitigation measures.
Track, analyze, and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) related to operational, environmental, equipment, and financial performance.
Assist in developing, tracking, and managing operational and capital budgets, including identifying project requirements, obtaining quotations, and monitoring expenditures.
Identify cost-saving opportunities and lead or support continuous improvement initiatives to improve operational reliability, efficiency, environmental performance, and cost effectiveness. Participate in operational planning, project management, capital projects, and strategy development related to site infrastructure and operational improvements.
Assist in coordinating and supervising third-party contractors performing work on site, ensuring work is completed safely, in compliance with regulatory and site requirements, and to the expected quality standards.
Maintain accurate operational records, inspection documentation, maintenance records, monitoring data, and other documentation required to support regulatory compliance and effective site management.
Collaborate with Operations, Environmental, Maintenance, Health & Safety, Engineering, and other internal teams to identify operational issues, develop solutions, and implement improvements.
