Purpose
The Natural Resources Technician supports Wet’suwet’en First Nation’s Natural Resources Department by assisting with the intake, tracking, organization, mapping, fieldwork, and administrative support required for land and resource referrals within WFN Territory. The position helps maintain referral records, support deadline tracking, complete data entry, prepare basic maps, and assist the Natural Resources Referrals Coordinator with meetings, correspondence, field visits, and day-to-day referral tasks.
This position supports the referral process under the direction of the Natural Resources Referrals Coordinator and does not carry final decision-making authority on WFN referral positions or responses.
Primary Responsibilities
- Assist with receiving, logging, organizing, and following up on incoming land and resource referrals within WFN Territory in accordance with WFN policies and direction.
- Maintain referral records, correspondence, deadline information, file status updates, and supporting documents in WFN’s referral management and filing systems.
- Assist with drafting referral summaries, meeting notes, information request summaries, and draft correspondence when directed by the Natural Resources Referrals Coordinator.
- Support communication with WFN staff, consultants, proponents, Crown agencies, and community contacts regarding referral status, information requests, and follow-up items.
- Conduct data entry and maintain referral, project, contact, and fieldwork records.
- Prepare basic maps and spatial information using GIS and web-based mapping tools for Natural Resources Department referrals and projects.
- Assist with organizing Natural Resources referral meetings, including agendas, meeting packages, minutes, and action item tracking.
- Monitor referral deadlines and bring upcoming deadlines or missing information to the Natural Resources Referrals Coordinator’s attention.
- Conduct fieldwork in WFN Territory as assigned and assist with site visits, field notes, photographs, GPS points, and field data organization.
- Assist with environmental fieldwork, including environmental monitoring, archaeological assessments, fish habitat assessments, and wildlife habitat assessments where assigned.
- Support the collection and organization of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) information for Natural Resources Department databases and reports, where directed and in accordance with WFN protocols.
- Provide general administrative and technical support to Natural Resources projects and working groups.
- Maintain confidentiality and handle WFN referral information and culturally sensitive information appropriately.
- Carry out other related duties as assigned by the Natural Resources Referrals Coordinator or WFN Program Manager.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Completion of a post-secondary program related to natural resources, environmental studies, forestry, land administration, Indigenous governance, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience acceptable to WFN.
- Minimum 1-3 years of work experience in an office, field, natural resources, referrals, administration, or related setting.
- Valid driver’s licence and reliable transportation.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, iPads, ArcGIS, and web-based mapping tools such as Google Earth.
- Proficiency with field equipment such as GPS, compass, and maps is an asset.
- Experience with data entry, file management, meeting notes, mapping, or referrals tracking is an asset.
- Experience working within a First Nations environment is an asset.
- Knowledge of Wet’suwet’en culture and traditions is an asset.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to follow direction, manage tasks, and bring deadlines or issues forward in a timely way.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of Natural Resources Department and WFN matters.
Physically able to meet fieldwork requirements.
