Associate, Direct Private Equity (FIG) - Montreal

Our client, a leading Canadian private equity firm, is seeking an Associate with FIG expertise to join their direct private equity investment team based in Montreal.
The firm is currently deploying their latest FIG-focused fund of over $500 million. The team invests across the financial services industry (fintech and beyond), with a particular focus on large, long-term investments throughout North America. Reporting directly to the partner level, the Associate will evaluate potential investment opportunities, conduct research, develop recommendations, and participate in the negotiation and execution of investments. The successful candidate will also be responsible for monitoring and managing the investments.
This is an exciting opportunity for an individual looking to jump start a move into private equity or who is keen to join a growing team with strong mentorship and build out a new strategy within an established and successful platform.
Responsibilities Conduct research, perform relevant analysis, and build complex dynamic financial models (including testing assumptions and sensitivities) to evaluate a variety of private equity investment opportunities;
Perform due diligence on opportunities including past and projected financial performance, quality of management teams, investment merits and risks, expected returns, regulatory environment, industry dynamics and other relevant factors;
Review 3rd party due diligence reports (legal, accounting, industry strategic reviews, environmental, etc.);
Perform valuation analysis, including DCF, precedent transactions and comparable company analysis;
Meet with company management and review past performance, strategy, outlook, regulatory and industry issues, and other relevant topics as required;
Assist in creating and presenting investment recommendations outlining potential investment opportunities to the investment committee;
Coordinate with various investment and operations professionals to monitor ongoing financial and operational performance of investments;
Assist in performing reviews of valuations for investments and monitoring potential exit alternatives (including public market conditions and potential strategic partners);
Attend annual meetings and board meetings as required;
Work with management teams on strategic business initiatives and assist in building and leveraging relationships with portfolio company management teams and other stakeholders;
Participate in and contribute to weekly departmental meetings and investment recommendation meetings.
Qualifications 2-5 years of relevant experience in FIG investment banking, private equity or other relevant fast-paced and analytically driven investment organization;
Undergraduate degree, preferably in business or finance;
Bilingual (French and English) is considered an asset;
CFA, or CPA, CA designation is considered an asset;
Strong research, financial modeling (i.e. LBO), analytical and valuation skills with prior experience conducting due diligence;
Flexibility, adaptability and initiative with the ability to multi-task and work in a very fast-paced environment with firm deadlines;
