The District of Ucluelet (the “District”) is situated on a peninsula on Vancouver Island’s breathtaking west coast. As one of BC’s resort municipalities, visitors come from around the globe to experience our pristine coastlines, temperate rainforests, mountain and ocean views, and Vancouver Island’s top-rated Wild Pacific Trail. Ucluelet has been named one of BC's top ten small towns and offers an endless range of outdoor activities including whale and wildlife viewing, fishing, hiking, biking, kayaking, and surfing. The District has a steady population of about 1,600 that swells during tourism season; with a flourishing community based on outdoor recreation and eco-tourism, Ucluelet is an unforgettable place to live, work, and play.
The District is seeking an energetic and committed Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) who can balance the achievement of council’s vision, goals and strategic priorities with the efficient, cost-effective day-to-day operational management of the municipality and the delivery of a high quality of service to residents. This is an excellent career opportunity for a CAO, or an experienced local government manager who is interested in taking on the next challenge in their career and assuming the role of principal advisor to a progressive and cohesive municipal council, as well as providing principled and inspired leadership to a dedicated staff team of skilled professionals. Ucluelet offers an abundance of opportunities for someone interested in the West Coast Lifestyle, and a strong commitment to, and active participation in the community, will be considered essential.
The ideal candidate will have experience and a proven track record in developing positive working relationships with elected officials, employees, external agencies and the District’s First Nations to ensure opportunities for the community are leveraged in a way that secures its growth and sustainability. You are an effective communicator and a strategic thinker with natural leadership skills who provides good mentorship and coaching to the team. In addition, you are committed to delivering exceptional public service and best practices in public administration. You are comfortable managing many different priorities concurrently, and are adept at moving agendas forward in a multi-stakeholder environment. Your knowledge of land-use as well as strategic planning will assist municipal staff in managing development pressure. Experience in community capacity building and an ability to leverage opportunities for the well-being of all members of the community will be a significant asset. In summary, the District is seeking an inspiring leader who possesses strong business acumen and has the ability to develop creative solutions to important issues and can build a positive organizational culture.
The ideal candidate will have generalist experience and skills in a variety of local government responsibilities, including serving a five person Council, combined with professional certification in local government or a degree in public or business administration. There are a variety of capital projects planned or underway, and experience with capital project management and grant program funding would be beneficial. A minimum of five years of experience as a senior manager preferably in a BC local government setting would be an asset.
