Communications Supervisor - Communications

Position Status: One (1) Full-time (40 hours/week), Permanent Position
The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is looking for a full-time, permanent Communications Supervisor to join the Communications department. Reporting to the Communications Manager the Communications Supervisor will play a crucial role in overseeing the daily operations of the Communications Department through supervision of the Communications Project Lead team. This role will inspire their team, resolve challenges, and ensure operational excellence and alignment of messaging with Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s strategic objectives. The Communications Supervisor must have the ability to work in an open work environment with a very collaborative team and have strong interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee project intake and assignment, balance team workload, review team deliverables, provide feedback, and track projects to ensure deadlines are met.
- Provide communication advice and leadership for the Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s branding, media, and stakeholder relations.
- Plan, monitor, and oversee projects to deliver defined requirements and meet strategic objectives.
- Review communications requests and assign work to the appropriate team members based on timelines, capacity, and strategic value.
- Work collaboratively with design, photo/video, digital/social, and other team members to ensure successful completion of projects and department requests.
- Review copy for multiple platforms including but not limited to websites, social media, radio, video, email newsletters, and print material. Write, edit, and publish when needed.
- Assist in maintaining brand consistency across all communication channels.
- Promote a workplace culture centered on inclusivity, trust, accountability, collaboration, and recognition, creating a thriving environment with high employee satisfaction.
- Oversee staff to ensure work is performed according to the established standards.
- Recommend changes to leadership to ensure all communications areconsistent, and all processes are effective.
- Ensure all communication messages and branding are culturally sensitive and appropriate, and consistent with the mission and values of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.
- Ensure the creation of engaging content and execution of communications plans with a meticulous focus on the values and goals of assigned departments and/or portfolios.
- Establish guidelines, templates, and workflows to improve the efficiency and consistency of project output.
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders and partners and foster and maintain positive and collaborative relationships.
- Collaborate on department staffing responsibilities, including hiring, onboarding, and training.
- Mentor team members and provide effective leadership through feedback, coaching, and formal evaluations.
- Approve operational items such as timesheets, time off requests, and expense claims in accordance with organizational policies and practices.
- Participate in and support the overall strategic direction of the department and Otipemisiwak Métis Government.
- Perform other duties as required or assigned.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong understanding of communications and content management platforms.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Explorer, PowerPoint).
- Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of marketing and communications principles.
- Ability to identify issues and implement creative and strategic solutions to overcome problems.
- Ability to thrive in a dynamic and changing environment, including a demonstrated ability to be adaptable and flexible to potentially changing needs.
- Strong leadership skills with a recognized strength in leading and engaging teams and creating a culture that promotes the development of individual and organizational capacity.
- Strong organizational, time management, planning and execution skills with the ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven track record of building collaborative partnerships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to adhere to strict confidentiality of sensitive information. High level of integrity, ethics, and professionalism.
- Cultural and political sensitivity.
- Knowledge of Métis history, culture, and issues affecting Métis people. An in-depth understanding on the Otipemisiwak Métis Government and Métis culture is an asset.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in communications or related field (journalism, public relations, marketing, etc.).
- Minimum three (3) years of related experience in professional writing, journalism, communications, public relations, or similar role.
- Supervisory or Team Lead experience is preferred.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities or organizations in an asset.
- Knowledge and/or experience working in a political environment is an asset.
Other Requirements
- Position is based in Edmonton; in-office presence is required.
- Ability to work a regular schedule from Monday – Friday, 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM, with occasional evenings and weekends as required.
- Ability to travel throughout Alberta, with notice.
- Reliable transportation and valid Class 5 driver’s license.
- Acceptable attainment of a Police Information Check is required.
