JOB TITLE: Staff Writer

REPORTS TO: Deputy Editor

OVERVIEW: VICE is looking for a motivated and talented staff writer for our Toronto office. This writer will have excellent reporting skills and can regularly find and write original, insightful, and exclusive stories. The ideal candidate has a deep knowledge of Canadian news and issues and will develop high-impact coverage across a beat or a number of beats, and be able to generate scoops, break news, and comment on news from their beat(s).

While daily reporting is the backbone of this position, enterprise work and feature writing are expected. Staff writers must also be extremely sensitive to how well their stories are resonating, as well as ensuring that they are not ignoring key issues in their sphere of coverage. Candidates must also be excited about telling stories in multimedia formats and should be able to report stories that could also work as podcasts or video.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Write approximately five stories a week
  • Pitch original stories daily
  • Find angles on breaking news stories
  • Work in a collaborative environment
  • Work in video or audio as required
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • University or college degree, preferably in a related field
  • At least one to three years of experience in daily journalism
  • A strong social media presence is an asset
  • Video production experience is also an asset
