The challenge:
The Plumbing & Gas Safety Codes Officer (P&G SCO) ensures compliance with all relevant plumbing and gas safety codes, standards, and regulations. In this position, you will be responsible for a number of tasks including reviewing construction plans, issuing permits, performing site inspections, and providing information to contractors and homeowners on code requirements. You will inspect, evaluate, and approve plumbing and gas systems to ensure they meet safety requirements, protect public health and safety, and prevent hazards such as leaks or contamination.
Park Enterprises is based in Lethbridge and provides permitting and inspection services to clients across Alberta. We are specifically seeking candidates who are able to provide service to locations such as Okotoks and Calgary area. Travel is required based on the service area.
What you will do:
- Inspect installations for compliance to the appropriate codes, policies, and bylaws
- Examine applications and issue private sewage disposal system permits
- Prepare permit conditions and notices to alert designers, contractors, and homeowners of deficiencies in the design or construction
- Review permits for large scale projects to ensure completeness and that all the requirements are fulfilled
- Follow up on conditions and notices to ensure deficiencies are corrected
- Complete inspection reports, inspection processing, deficiency monitoring, and client follow-ups as required
- Provide guidance and advice on related codes and regulations to contractors, designers, developers, and homeowners; educate on safety codes, and foster relationships with external stakeholders to enhance Park’s reputation and service quality
- Other duties as related to the position
What you will bring:
- Valid Plumbing Group A and Gas Group A certifications issued by the Alberta Safety Codes Council
- Preference will be given to candidates with a valid Plumbing Group B Certificate issued by the Alberta Safety Codes Council
- Extensive knowledge of the Alberta Safety Codes Act, Gas Protection Act, Plumbing National Code, Gasfitter Trade Regulation, Plumber Trade Regulation, and all other applicable regulations
- Considerable knowledge of the standard methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in the plumbing and gasfitter trade
- Valid Alberta driver’s license
- Exceptionally English communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to deal effectively with the public, tactfully handling complex and difficult code-related matters
- Knowledge of interior and exterior plumbing and gas components
- Customer-oriented and skilled at conveying technical concepts in a simple and professional manner to address diverse customer needs
- Effective time management with keen attention to detail and the ability to prioritize tasks and actions needed
- Ability to efficiently handle multiple tasks, adapt to changing priorities, and work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
- Proficient in the use of a computer, tablet and smartphones for data entry, plan review, and communication with customers
