GENERAL POSITION OVERVIEW:
LPNs are expected to work professionally with all stakeholders involved in the coordination of Resident care services including Pharmacy Providers, ALA Case Managers, Resident Family Advocates, and others. LPNs are required to have a thorough understanding of the scope of their practice, as well as Choices in Community Living procedures for each service area. LPNs will work closely ALA Case Managers (RNs) who are on call 24 hours per day.
LPNs are responsible for mentoring and supporting HCAs to understand and perform the tenets of the Resident Care Strategy. Leading by example and the coaching of HCAs are expectations of this position. LPNs are not expected to manage and discipline performance challenges; however they are expected to take immediate action if CICL Policies and Procedures are breached, and/or the safety of peer workers or Residents is at risk. Further responsibilities of the LPNs include and are not limited to:
- Assist in HCA orientation and training
- Assist in training of new LPNs
- Support HCAs in completing SeniorCare “To Do” lists during scheduled time slots
- Support HCAs in understanding of daily shift requirements
- Provide ongoing feedback to Site Director on staff performance
“In-Charge” Responsibilities
- If an LPN is required to assume responsibility of the staff in the absence of the Site Director, the LPN will assume “in-charge” responsibilities which will include but are not limited to:
- Scheduling of short-notice shift replacement
- Validating and reporting family concerns and inquiries and reporting this information to management in a timely manner
- Ensuring the security of the Lodge
- Narcotic management
- Ensuring the overall quality of Resident Care is being maintained
- Ensuring emergency procedures are being followed as per policies
Directly reporting to the Site Director, the LPN is accountable for: Resident Relations, Resident Personal Care, Resident Medical Care, Reporting, Resident Social/Spiritual/Emotional Well-Being, Quality Assurance, and Safety and Security. LPNs are regulated by the Health Professions Act, and are expected to work within their full scope of practice which is set forth and governed by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA).
