The responsibilities of the department span a wide range of functions creating a fast paced, varied and dynamic work environment. The team is responsible for buying physical coffee, tea, soluble coffee and cocoa from growing regions all over the world; the risk management and hedging of coffee on future exchanges; and managing the supply chain of these commodities to our 4 processing facilities in the Toronto area and Fort Worth, Texas. The team must stay on top of changing origin and market conditions globally as well as build key relationships with suppliers in North America and at origin to maintain quality and service expectations. The team consists of coffee and tea experts who manage quality, the cornerstone of Mother Parkers? business and products, through expert sensory capabilities in coffee and tea tasting and grading. Sustainability is an important part of Mother Parkers and the team manage all sourcing of sustainable products and the development of projects with producers and cooperatives at origin, as well as supporting sales and key customers on sustainability programs.
This exciting role will develop your capability across all functions within the Commodity Department, including commodity procurement, financial hedging and supply chain. Internally, you'll work closely Production, Quality, Product Development, Sales, Category and Customer Service. Externally, you?ll work with suppliers from all over the world, along with some of our customers. Stage one of the development program is Supply Chain. Reporting to the Manager, Commodities Supply Chain & Administration, the Commodities Trainee will gain in depth knowledge of the coffee and tea supply chain. You will focus initially on traffic and logistics of our commodities, ensuring there is adequate supply to the plants, as well as begin to develop your sensory skills in recognizing different origins and common faults found in coffee and/or tea. After the first year, the program will progress to more involvement across the group in areas such as commodities procurement, financial analysis, risk management, futures hedging, or within the product development team working closely with our raw materials and our sales and production teams. The Commodities trainee program starts you at the heart of our very exciting business and offers a basis of knowledge that will enable progression within the team or to other areas of the business, with the initial responsibilities:
Work with internal and external customers to assure optimal commodity inventory levels
Timely and accurate maintenance/updates of systems data and filing
Managing Plan Demand Requirements, including forward planning process, managing warehouses/carriers, decaffeination and co-packing tolling.
Monitor the movement of green coffee from Origin to Warehouse to ensure plants receive green coffee as scheduled. Manage and file all associated paperwork.
Manage green requirements from the local warehouse to the plant. Calculate requirements and execute in system.
Coordinate green coffee sampling (port and arrival samples etc.)
Address shortages, quality concerns and weight errors.
Regular coffee and/or tea cupping, tasting the coffee to screen for quality and profile
Support as needed in other areas of the Commodities & Product Development teams
Post-secondary education in business, finance, economics or science.
1 year relevant work experience in Supply Chain/Logistics/Procurement
High proficiency with MS Office, in particular excel.
Strong oral and written communication.
Ability to operate independently, and take initiative with minimal supervision.
Proactive at solving problems on own.
Attention to detail and organization.
Willing and able to learn the nuances of coffee cupping and grading.
Eager, willing and capable to help where needed in a fast paced customer focused environment.

Only candidates who have already graduated or graduated in December 2019 will be considered for this role. Applicants must have graduated from University and have at least 1 years' relevant work experience.
There will be 2 rounds of face to face interviews before a decision is made. This role will appeal to candidates interested in Supply Chain, traffic and logistics and procurement. This role involves financial analysis and risk management. Post-secondary education in business, finance, economics or science would be ideal.
If you are looking for a role in the futures market this is NOT the role. This role has nothing to do with trading, so those who wish to pursue CSC or anything in high finance, will be disappointed.
