IN‑HOUSE LAWYER
Location: Downtown Vancouver, BC
Job Type: Full‑time, in-office
Schedule: Monday to Friday
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking an experienced In‑House Lawyer to support a diversified franchise‑based organization operating across real estate, mortgage brokerage, travel services, property management, and housing‑related businesses.
This role is heavily focused on commercial advisory work, franchise operations, and contract drafting, with an emphasis on providing forward‑looking, practical legal guidance that supports business operations and growth. The position is based in downtown Vancouver, and reports directly to the EVP and CFO.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Franchise & Contract Focus
- Serve as the primary in‑house lawyer supporting multiple franchise systems
- Draft, review, negotiate, and manage franchise agreements, master franchise agreements, disclosure documents, amendments, renewals, and terminations
- Lead drafting and negotiation of complex commercial contracts including vendor agreements, service agreements, licensing arrangements, NDAs, and strategic agreements
- Develop and maintain contract templates, precedents, and internal guidelines
- Provide proactive legal advice aimed at preventing disputes and enabling efficient operations
Corporate & Business Support
- Advise the EVP, CFO, and senior leadership on legal risks and commercially practical solutions
- Support corporate governance matters including board and shareholder documentation
- Provide employment and HR‑related legal guidance in collaboration with People & Culture
- Ensure compliance with Canadian federal and provincial franchise and commercial laws
- Manage a strategic and measured use of external counsel
- Support special projects, transactions, restructurings, and strategic initiatives
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Licensed to practice law in British Columbia (or eligible for transfer)
- 5+ years of relevant experience focused on commercial, franchise, and contract‑driven legal work
- Strong experience drafting and negotiating commercial and franchise agreements
- Solid understanding of franchise business models and operational realities
- Ability to provide pragmatic, risk‑balanced legal advice to executives
- Comfortable working in a non‑litigious, business‑focused in‑house environment
- Ability to work in‑office in downtown Vancouver full time
- Must reside in the Lower Mainland
NICE TO HAVE
- Experience supporting a franchisor or national franchise network
- Mortgage brokerage or financial services franchise experience
- Background in real estate, property management, or regulated industries
- Prior in‑house or advisory/transactional experience
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Salary Range: $170,000- $200,000 per year, depending on experience
