At Blackbird Collective, we are a team of dedicated professionals committed to precision construction and a culture of mutual respect. We are looking for an experienced Hardscape Foreman who takes pride in exact tolerances and wants to lead premier residential and commercial builds.
The Role
As the Hardscape Foreman, you are the backbone of our construction operations. You will lead a crew of 2–4 installation technicians, driving projects from excavation and base prep through to final compaction and sealing. You are responsible for site management, equipment operation, build integrity, and ensuring every project meets the "Blackbird Standard."
Key Responsibilities
- Site & Team Leadership: Direct daily job-site construction, manage crew workflows, enforce strict safety standards, and train junior installers on proper hardscaping techniques.
- Project Execution: Lead the installation of full landscapes including retaining walls, interlocking pavers, fences, irrigation, plantings.
- Base Prep & Layout: Oversee accurate site layout, shoot elevations/grades, calculate aggregate needs, and execute precise base compaction and drainage systems.
- Equipment Management: Expertly operate and supervise the use of excavators, skid steers, cut-off saws, plate compactors, and transit levels.
- Quality & Tolerance Control: Conduct quality checks on lines, levels, and pitch to ensure professional craftsmanship.
- Client & PM Coordination: Serve as the main on-site contact for clients, sub-trades, and our Project Managers to keep builds on schedule and within budget.
Qualifications & Skills
- Experience: 3–5 years of professional hardscape construction experience, with at least 2 years in a foreman or crew leader role.
- Technical Mastery: Deep knowledge of base preparation, soil mechanics, slope/drainage calculations, retaining wall systems (e.g., Allan Block, Belgard), and stone cutting.
- Equipment Operation: Proven competency operating skid steers, mini-excavators, and heavy compaction machinery.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to handle demanding physical labor in all weather conditions and regularly lift 80+ lbs.
- Driver’s License: Valid BC Class 5 driver's license with a clean abstract (heavy trailer towing experience, Class 3 or Air Brake endorsement is a plus).
