The intent of the program is to enhance readiness, support success and establish meaningful relationships prior to and during the Kindergarten and Grade 1 school year. The Kindergarten teacher will work closely with coordinator, classroom staff team, students, parents, elders and community. The Kindergarten teacher will deliver a culturally appropriate early learning educational curriculum. Qeq College is a Kindergarten and Grade 1 preparatory program that focuses on students and their families within a holistic framework. A 4-week Summer Program provide opportunities to the children and families to familiarize themselves with school routines, classrooms and supports. The teacher will conduct a variety of assessments and provide information to the student, family and future classroom teacher. Collaboration and case file management is critical to the program's success.
Qualifications:
Membership in the BC College of Teachers. Bachelor's Degree in Education. A minimum of 15 UBC units for elementary preparation. A minimum of 6 UBC units of early childhood education (or equivalent). Appropriate courses may include: Early Learning in BC (VIU EDEL 500), Full Day Kindergarten (VIU EDEL 501), Early Childhood Education Courses at UBC numbered ECED 380 to ECED 480
· Successful classroom instruction experience and/or student teaching experience in a primary setting or equivalent
· An understanding of Indigenous worldviews
· Willingness to work within the framework of Qeq College, a culturally grounded program built around Indigenous culture and teachings
· Demonstrate proficiency to work with colleagues and students in knowledge producing and knowledge sharing
· Maintain open, friendly, and cooperative relationship with each child's family and encourage their involvement in the program.
· Demonstrate ability in adapting the early primary program for Kindergarten children
· Participate in team planning sessions with all project staff to ensure well-coordinated and effective delivery of project services to meet program objectives
· Prepare and maintain attendance, activity planning, accounting, or personnel reports and records
· Be directly involved with program activities for both children and parents as needed
· Demonstrate knowledge of play-based learning and the Early Learning Framework
· Demonstrate knowledge with the Kindergarten continua (oral language, social responsibility, numeracy, reading and writing).
· Practice within a trauma-informed lens
· Demonstrate sound knowledge of developmental level children 4-6 years old children
Pay: $35.00-$40.00 per hour
