JOB PURPOSE
The purpose of the Senior’s Health Nurse Educator is to support the educational and clinical competencies of staff within the Senior’s Health units at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Saint John Regional Hospital and Ridgewood Veteran’s Wing. This role requires ongoing clinical expertise, mentorship, support and education of staff within the Senior’s Health program. The individual is responsible to plan, organize, coordinate, design, present and facilitate learning activities and education programs for employees as directed by Unit Manager and/or Clinical Director of the Senior’s Health program.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Active Registration in the Province of New Brunswick
- Baccalaureate degree in Nursing
- Minimum of five (5) years recent experience in Geriatric Medicine or Family Medicine
- Certification in Adult Education is an asset.
- Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) certification in Gerontology or ability to complete.
- Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) certification is an asset.
- Must have current BCLS
- Experience in simulation training and debriefing an asset.
- Horizon One/LEADS course or ability to complete within 18 months of hire.
- Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate staff and work with multi-disciplinary team.
- Demonstrated effective teaching skills in both a formal and informal setting.
- Demonstrated leadership qualities and the ability to be self-directed
- High regard for confidentiality for patients and staff associated information, ethical comportment and the ability to effectively deal with conflict.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team.
- Experience working with technology and virtual communications platforms.
- Excellent writing, grammar, and organization skills are required.
- Demonstrates initiative for personal professional development and commitment to continuing education.
- Ability to perform the duties of the position
- Must have the ability to work flexible hours
- Travel is required

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Staff Educator is responsible for:
- Facilitating BCLS courses as needed and maintaining RQI compliance with staff.
- Coordinates and teaches Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) sessions.
- Participates in providing education sessions aligned with the Senior’s Health framework.
- Facilitate other educational programs as required.
- Determine educational needs using appropriate assessment tools.
- Develop learning programs/solutions based on the principles of Adult Education.
- Plan, deliver and evaluate education programs. Programs include, but not limited to, instructor-led and e-learning delivery methodology.
- Promote continuing education and professional development of staff.
- Work independently and with minimal supervision
- Professional communication and collaboration with colleagues and clients
- Provide just-in-time, educational support at the bedside based on staff needs.
- Provides leadership and support to new employees during orientation.
- Works collaboratively with interdisciplinary team members and within a multidisciplinary environment.
- Active participant in Senior’s Health committees, meetings and team engagement.
- Participates in programs promoting quality improvement (QI) on clinical units.
- Interacts with the unit manager/charge nurse in identifying, planning, implementing and evaluating changes.
- Perform other duties as assigned based on Operational Requirements.
