CKF Inc. has eight manufacturing facilities located in North America with a total workforce in excess of 900 employees. Our operations produce foam, plastic and molded pulp products in the areas of retail, foodservice, produce, and protective packaging industries.
We are seeking an experienced Process Engineer with a strong background in polymer engineering, specifically in extrusion and thermoforming processes. This individual will be responsible for optimizing these processes to ensure the highest standards of quality, efficiency, and safety. The role involves collaborating closely with operations leaders and operators to implement statistical best practices and continuous improvement methodologies. The engineer will work with cross-functional teams, including production, quality control, and Product Development, to drive innovation in polymer processing technologies.
The ideal candidate will have at least 3-5 years of experience in polymer and plastic processing and hold a bachelor’s degree in chemical or mechanical engineering. This position will report to the Plant Manager.
Job Responsibilities:
1. Process Optimization:
· Develop, optimize, and oversee extrusion and thermoforming processes for polymer-based products.
· Analyze production data and identify opportunities for process improvements to enhance efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness while reducing waste.
· Conduct experiments and trials to test new materials and process parameters.
· Implement and monitor process control systems to maintain high standards of product quality and consistency.
· Lead continuous improvement initiatives to reduce waste, improve cycle times, and increase overall productivity.
2. Collaboration with Operations:
· Work closely with operations leaders and operators to understand production challenges and identify areas for improvement.
· Provide technical support to production teams for troubleshooting and resolving issues related to extrusion and thermoforming equipment and processes
· Implement operational projects related to polymer and plastic processing.
· Develop and maintain technical documentation, including process specifications and standard operating procedures.
3. Quality Assurance:
· Develop and implement quality control procedures for extrusion/thermoforming processes.
· Monitor production to ensure compliance with industry standards and customer specifications.
· Troubleshoot and resolve any issues related to product quality.
· Apply Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing principles to drive continuous improvement in quality and efficiency.
4. Safety and Compliance:
· Ensure all processes comply with safety regulations and standards.
· Conduct risk assessments and implement measures to mitigate hazards.
· Stay updated on industry regulations and ensure company practices are in compliance.
· Implement safety frameworks such as OSHA guidelines and other relevant or regulatory standards.
5. Innovation and Continuous Improvement:
· Research and implement new technologies and methods to improve extrusion processes.
· Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and reduce costs.
· Collaborate with R&D to develop new products and materials.
· Utilize Design of Experiments (DOE) and Statistical Process Control (SPC) for process optimization.
Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. A Master's degree is preferred.
· Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in polymer extrusion engineering.
· Proven experience in process development, optimization, and troubleshooting in an extrusion and thermoforming environment.
· Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
· Proficiency in extrusion and forming process design and development.
· Knowledge of polymer materials and their properties.
· Familiarity with quality control and assurance practices.
· Strong project management skills.
· Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
· Proficiency with CAD software and process simulation tools.
· Relevant industry certifications (e.g., Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing) are a plus.
Working Environment:
· Combination of office and production floor; must be exposed to noisy environments.
· May require occasional travel to other company sites or customer locations.
· Must adhere to safety protocols and wear personal protective equipment as required.
