Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) – Medical Detox, Social Diversion
Safe Harbour Society is seeking a compassionate, skilled, and recovery-oriented Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to join our Medically Supported Detox and Social Diversion teams on a Casual basis.
The LPN plays a vital role in delivering safe, client-centered nursing care to individuals experiencing substance use and mental health challenges. Working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team, the LPN supports medically supervised withdrawal management, client stabilization, medication administration, health monitoring, and coordinated transitions to ongoing treatment and recovery supports.

Key Responsibilities
- Provide safe nursing care to clients undergoing medically supported withdrawal management and stabilization.
- Perform nursing assessments within the LPN scope of practice and monitor clients for changes in physical and mental health status.
- Administer medications, monitor therapeutic responses, and report concerns in accordance with physician orders, organizational policies, and CLPNA standards.
- Monitor withdrawal symptoms using established clinical protocols and communicate changes requiring escalation.
- Respond to medical and behavioural emergencies within scope of practice and collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to ensure timely intervention.
- Support client transitions to treatment, recovery programming, housing, and community-based supports.
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in accordance with regulatory standards and organizational policies.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurse practitioners, EMS, Recovery Alberta, hospitals, treatment providers, pharmacies, and internal programs to coordinate client care.
- Support intake, triage, medication reconciliation, ongoing monitoring, discharge planning, and follow-up coordination.
- Promote dignity, respect, equity, cultural safety, and client autonomy in all interactions.
- Contribute to a safe, collaborative, and accountable clinical environment that supports recovery-oriented practice.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, infection prevention and control practices, and continuous learning.
Qualifications & Experience
- Active, unrestricted registration as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA).
- Minimum 2–3 years of nursing experience in addictions, withdrawal management, mental health, emergency, acute care, community health, or a related clinical setting. Experience in medical detox is considered a strong asset.
- Demonstrated knowledge of substance use disorders, withdrawal management, medication administration, and recovery-oriented care.
- Strong assessment, observation, and clinical documentation skills.
- Ability to recognize changes in client condition and escalate concerns appropriately.
- Experience working with individuals experiencing mental health concerns, trauma, homelessness, or complex social needs is an asset.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
- Current Vulnerable Sector Check.

Working Conditions
This position requires flexibility to work rotating days, evenings, nights, weekends, statutory holidays, and occasional overtime, based on operational needs. Our Casual team members are required to work a minimum of 3 shifts per month in order to maintain their position.
