The Akwe:go Program Coordinator will be responsible to improve the quality of life of urban Indigenous Children aged 7-12 years through the delivery of appropriate activities and services. Traditional cultural teachings and values are the guiding principles through client based programming and individualized supports that encourage healthy lifestyle choices. The program’s focus is on enhancing the skills, knowledge, attitudes, and values that will demonstrate positive personal choices and develop awareness of the consequences of negative behaviours.
Key Responsibilities:
- · Supports children ages 7-12 by providing one-to-one and participant-based services.
- · Provides wrap-around services and a strengths-based action plan for each individual direct-service user.
- · Promotes awareness and ensures access to the program through a variety of outreach efforts and promotional activities.
- · Encourages participation of Two-Spirit and Indigenous LGBTQ+ children through inclusive practices and diverse programming.
- · Promotes the development of protocols and referral agreements as appropriate to meet the needs and outcomes of children.
- · Refers children to appropriate services as required and to document, advocate and liaise with internal and external resources and supports.
- · Accurately report and ensure all program objectives are being met in accordance with agreements.
- · Outreaches and engages community partners and stakeholders as it pertains to the needs of the children served and the program deliverables.
- · Ensures all service activities utilise culture throughout all junctures of planning and delivery.
- · Utilises quarterly reporting tools and database (if applicable) to input all data as required.
Qualifications:
- · Possess post-secondary education in Indigenous studies, social work, child and youth work or combination of the equivalent and relevant education.
- · The candidate will have a minimum of three (3) years of demonstrated and related work experience with children and youth.
- · Strong knowledge and awareness of Indigenous culture and history, with particular emphasis on family violence, child welfare, the impacts of trauma, Indigenous youth engagement and community outreach.
- · Ability to work professionally and collaboratively with child welfare agencies in Ontario.
- · Strong understanding of the Child and Family Services Act and Ontario Children’s Aid Societies, with particular emphasis of impact on Indigenous families.
