The Manufacturing Safety Alliance of BC (“the Alliance”) was established to reduce injuries in the industry. We serve a demographic of approximately 3000 manufacturers in BC and employ a professional team of health and safety specialists to support our members. We deliver a range of occupational health & safety advisory services, resources, training, and provide the Occupational Safety Standard Program for the Manufacturing industry.

Profile Summary

The Manufacturing Safety Alliance of BC is seeking a dynamic and creative Marketing and PR Specialist with public relations and social media expertise, strong writing and interviewing abilities, plus event organizing and strategic communications experience. The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing or Communications, with previous experience writing experience for print and digital publications. This is a full-time salaried position, based at the Manufacturing Safety Alliance offices in Chilliwack, BC, reporting to the Marketing Manager.

The position will drive core messaging in the media and social media, informing marketing strategies on Alliance printed collateral, such as brochures, course calendars, and pamphlets. Moreover, the position will participate in digital analysis and visual communication development.

As a key member of the Marketing team, the successful candidate will take a leading content and publishing role for the organization’s quarterly magazine, distilling complex information into a compelling brand narrative. The position will also identify and participate in public/member engagements, and develop print and email communications for external stakeholders.

The position will be involved in developing and implementing key messaging, strategy, and workflows for a range of promotional campaigns.

The position will also drive and oversee organization of major Alliance events, leading colleagues from Services and Stakeholder Relations to execute a high-profile annual conference, gala award ceremony, and other events. The selected candidate will have demonstrated successful event planning and execution (including engagement with sponsors, advertisers, exhibitors, partners, and clients/members).

The primary functions of the Marketing & PR Specialist are to:

  • Build awareness for the Alliance and Occupational Safety Standard of Excellence brands through media outreach, partnerships, and promotion
  • Assist in marketing activities by demonstrating expertise in various areas that include content development and optimization, event planning, etc.
  • Track media and social media performance, and assist in analyzing marketing performance and demographic data to help shape future marketing strategies
  • Develop and direct interviews and video production for online and printed publication and distribution
  • Gain an understanding of the Manufacturing Safety Alliance of BC’s key audiences and select the best medium of engagement
  • Plan and execute initiatives to reach target audiences through appropriate channels, building relationships with relevant stakeholders
  • Oversee and manage execution of events
  • Develop written content for publications and marketing collateral for events, and related publications for public stakeholders
  • Conduct market research to determine member needs, habits and trends
  • Devise mechanisms of engagement including hosting public focus groups, facilitating sessions, develop media relations strategies and building relations with stakeholders

Key activities and responsibilities

  • Develop a strong, dynamic and integrated narrative for the Manufacturing Safety Alliance of BC and identify and leverage opportunities to position the organization’s voice and brand in the BC manufacturing industry
  • Develop and lead the execution of communication strategies in support of health and safety priorities with guidance from the Marketing Manager, and input from the Chief Operating Officer and the Manager of Stakeholder Relations
  • Establish and maintain active and strong working relationships with partners, organizations and individuals influencing the Alliance members and event sponsors as needed
  • Provide writing capacity at a corporate level and use effective storytelling to support priority communications initiatives such as the quarterly Alliance magazine
  • Develop informational, marketing, and promotional materials using a variety of media, including newsletters, brochures, fact sheets, publications, radio and television public service announcements, advertisements, pamphlets, photographs, articles, reports, charts, graphs, and video where required or in liaison with an external consultant
  • Prepare the writing, editing, format, and production of materials used for member or potential members, public relations, marketing and promotion; review all external communications initiatives prior to Marketing Manager’s approval
  • Fact-check and copy edit to produce high-quality, outward-facing content
  • Manage event logistics (including venue selection, organization of internal planning meetings, updates, personnel, event binders, sponsorship, entertainment, speakers, emcee) and budgets
  • Conduct post-event reviews
  • Fulfill budget expectations for events under the guidance of the Marketing Manager, with input from the CFO
  • Strategize, create, and execute media engagement plans
  • Draft and publish media releases and support media relations strategies where required
  • Provide monitoring, valuation, and reports on communication activities in collaboration with the Marketing Manager
  • Create and deliver effective presentations and content for publications
  • Plan and organize simple and complex events from concept to execution in a team environment

Other duties include:

  • Administrative tasks related to communications and event planning
  • Represent the Manufacturing Safety Alliance of BC at outside events where required

Skills and Experience

  • Advanced corporate and narrative writing abilities and presentation skills
  • Thorough understanding of marketing elements (including traditional and digital marketing) and market research methods
  • Demonstrated experience in marketing data analytics and tools
  • Solid computer skills, including MS Office, marketing software (Adobe Creative Suite and CRM) and applications for email marketing, web analytics, and digital advertising
  • Knowledge of web development tools
  • Well organized and detailed oriented, with proven track record of managing a variety of tasks at the same time
  • Exceptional oral communication and relationship-building skills
  • At least 3 years’ experience in a communications and event planning role with demonstrated ability to manage technical content
  • Experience leading and executing simple and complex events that include budget management
  • Experience with media relations and media placement
  • Proven ability to work within a collaborative team environment and manage consultants
  • Ability to work with senior management and offices in different locations
  • Understanding and ability to manage social media communication and develop engagement online
  • Experience communicating with all business levels, including executive management
  • Experience working with media and drafting media releases and supporting process
  • Effective project management skills. A PMP designation, although not a requirement, would be considered an asset
  • An understanding of occupational health and safety would be considered an asset
  • Prior media training would be considered an asset
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean abstract and ability to travel within BC

Education

  • Post-secondary degree in the areas of Marketing or Communications/Journalism
