Reporting to the Executive Director, Humanities, Languages and Curriculum Strategy, the Education Policy Advisor - Artificial Intelligence provides strategic leadership, policy advice, coordination, and system-level support for the responsible integration of artificial intelligence across Alberta’s K–12 education system.
This position plays a key role in advancing strategic integration of AI across curriculum, learning and teaching resources, learner supports, and system practices. The role ensures alignment with educational priorities, ethical standards, emerging national and international trends, and system needs.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing strategic leadership and coordination on initiatives and projects related to the integration of AI across curriculum, assessment, and system practices.
- Advising on the role of AI as both a tool and an area of curriculum content.
- Developing and refining system-level AI messaging, guidance, frameworks, and implementation approaches informed by research, partnerships, and emerging trends.
- Supporting the development of an AI Literacy Framework and digital and AI literacy competency progressions that define literacy skills and benchmarks for student achievement.
- Leading strategic engagement with internal and external partners, including public, separate, charter, independent, multicultural, francophone, and Indigenous education partners.
- Coordinating with privacy, technology, innovation, and governance partners to support responsible, ethical, and effective AI implementation.
- Monitoring and analyzing AI-related policy developments, including privacy, access models, data governance, equity, bias, accessibility, and cultural representation considerations.
- Providing advice and recommendations to senior leadership to support system transformation, program delivery, and strategic decision-making.
- Supporting implementation of AI-related initiatives, tools, pilot projects, learning supports, and professional learning for educators and system partners

You will apply research, analysis, innovation, and judgement to address complex and emerging issues where policy direction may be evolving or not yet fully established.
University graduation in a related field (Education, Public Administration, etc.), plus 4 years of related experience or equivalent as described below.
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
Required experience and knowledge include:
- Experience conducting research, policy analysis, issues analysis, and developing recommendations for senior leadership.
- Experience planning, coordinating, or leading strategic initiatives, complex projects, engagement activities, or implementation work.
- Knowledge of government strategic policy direction, decision-making processes, and the political environment in which ministries and school authorities operate.
- Knowledge of applicable legislation, policies, or frameworks related to education programs, curriculum, student learning, assessment, privacy, or data governance.
- Experience analyzing complex information and synthesizing findings into clear advice, options, briefing materials, presentations, reports, or recommendations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical or complex issues to diverse audiences.
- Strong organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities, coordinate work across stakeholders, and deliver outcomes within deadlines.
- Ability to influence, build relationships, resolve conflict, and support collaboration across diverse partners and stakeholders.
Assets:
- Familiarity with artificial intelligence, emerging technologies, digital literacy, AI literacy, or responsible technology use in education or government settings.
- Experience working with K–12 education systems, curriculum, student learning, assessment, teacher supports, or education policy.
- Experience working with privacy, security, data governance, digital innovation, or ethical technology implementation.
- Experience engaging with public, separate, francophone, charter, independent, Indigenous, multicultural, or community education partners.
- Experience developing frameworks, guidance documents, implementation plans, briefing materials, or policy recommendations.
Note: For professional work related to Communications (e.g. Public Affairs Officer), a directly related diploma is considered equivalent to university graduation in a related field.

This is a permanent position, and the hours of work are a total of 36.25 hours per week working out of Edmonton.
