Position Overview:
We are seeking a permanent Power Systems Application Officer to join our Control Centre Technology Systems Department in
Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Responsibilities:
- Work with neighboring utilities, MAPP/MISO, industry experts and software Vendor Engineers to develop and maintain
real-time tools/applications and expert systems for use by the system operators and back-office support staff for reliable
system planning and operation.
- Assist in the exchange of system knowledge and system data with neighboring utilities, MAPP/MISO, to develop and maintain
the combined system models for their State Estimator, Contingency Analysis and Market System for reliable system
operation.
- Review and maintain the accuracy of power system models for network applications and associated advisory programs.
- Assist in compliance activities to ensure adherence to compliance programs and standards relating to the AEMS applications.
This includes documentation, process development, monitoring controls, evidence collection, compliance oversite and
self-certification requirements and, participating in audits for TOP-001 R13 and TOP-010.
- Participate in the maintenance and upgrade of the AEMS network applications (Power Flow, Contingency Analysis, State
Estimation, Dynamic Ratings, Parameter Estimation and advisory applications) for the real-time and study mode used by the
System Control and the System Performance Departments for the efficient and reliable operation of the Manitoba Hydro
system.
- Assist in the creation and implementation of procedures for troubleshooting normal and emergency operating conditions within
the AEMS applications to maintain NERC's Real-time Assessment requirement. Applications include Power Flow,
Contingency Analysis, State Estimation, RTDYN, RM/SMTNET and others.
- Participate in the identification, development and implementation of new applications or enhancements to existing AEMS
applications, used by the system operators, to perform offline analysis studies and real-time operational assessments to
ensure the reliable and secure operation of the electrical power system.
- Assist in the training of junior engineers, technical officers, and system operators on the use of the AEMS network
applications.
- Provide support for initiatives relating to FAC-011-4 SOL monitoring, including ensuring the accuracy of the model and
reported violations, working with Manitoba Hydro's Reliability Coordinator (MISO) to address discrepancies, and supporting
engineers from System Performance Department in their post event analysis.
- Provide on-going support to ensure that the System Performance Department is provided with EMS-related data, including
snapshots of real-time or state-estimated data, reports produced from historical data and feedback on guideline
implementations.
