Position Overview:
We are seeking a Technical Assistant to join our Generation Design Department. Under the general direction of a Professional
Engineer or Senior Technical Support staff, conduct engineering analysis and design for new and existing control, metering, and
protection systems and their ancillary equipment in generating stations. Develop as a specialist in the knowledge of terminology,
practices, standards and software related control and metering systems.
Responsibilities:
- Design projects in accordance with applicable standards and codes and conduct investigations and in-depth analyses to make
complex decisions and recommendations.
- Provide specialized technical skills in all development and application aspects of control and metering systems for generating
stations, including generators, governing systems, excitation systems, Unit Control & Monitoring Systems (UCMS), and
ancillary equipment.
- Prepare and deliver designs, drawings, specifications, reports, manuals, training, standards, and programs for hydraulic
generator control, monitoring and ancillary systems for new and existing generating stations.
- Participate in cross-work group teams dealing with moderately complex issues on moderate to large projects.
- Assist in the preparation of instruction manuals, studies, commissioning procedures and commissioning reports.
- Contribute to the development and documentation of departmental design processes, procedures, and standards.
- Advise colleagues and project teams within the Corporation in the area of specialization, help develop junior staff, and review
design drawings to ensure they meet design criteria.
- Liaise and act as the technical specialist for field staff in generating station sites and to ensure effective use of UCMS.
- Make occasional field trips to assemble design information, ensure conformance of construction with designs, provide
advanced construction support and assist or lead commissioning activities.
- Be an advocate for learning, proper processes and continuous improvement.
Qualifications:
- Long-term electrical apprenticeship resulting in Power Line Technician or Journeyperson Certificate showing progressive
responsibility plus successful completion of Distribution Engineering Technical Schools (Levels 1 and 2) plus a minimum four
years directly related experience in electrical distribution systems of which two years must be in complex distribution design.
- A two-year diploma in Engineering Technology from an institute of recognized standing and four years of directly related
experience. Preference will be given to graduates with an Electrical or Civil specialization; however other specializations may
still be considered. Successful completion of Distribution Engineering Technical Schools (Levels 1 and 2).
- Must obtain and maintain a current Personnel Risk Assessment and a "Clear" security rating in accordance with Manitoba
Hydro policy P513.
- Knowledge of Programmable Logic Controllers, and Human Machine Interfaces, software version control, and computer
security.
