MEDACOM Atlantic provides emergency and non-emergency dispatch service for Island EMS (ground ambulance) and 34 volunteer fire departments across the Island. Reporting to the Medacom Atlantic Operations Manager, the Public Safety Communications Officer is responsible for the following:

Supporting Islanders by answering and handling 911 calls as per Standard Operating Procedures. This includes the provision of Emergency Medical Dispatch instructions for emergency situations such as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), childbirth, choking, bleeding control and more through use of Medical Priority Dispatch System

Delivering emergency service dispatching

Delivering high-quality customer service for all customers/patients

Monitoring and coordinating the movement of Island EMS resources
-
Booking and coordinating non-emergency ambulance transfers
-
Managing handoffs, off-load delays, out of province coordination, emergency department back logs, and shift over-runs

Building and maintaining strong relationships with the internal Shift Captains & Teams

Support internal and external service inquiries through reporting

Collaborate alongside emergency personnel to answer the call to public safety.

As Medacom Atlantic is a 24hr emergency service, the successful applicant must be available to work rotating 10-12 hour shifts including some days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. An availability calendar is available to request time off and identify availabilities.

High School diploma (or equivalent)

Excellent communications skills in English (bilingualism is an asset)

Work experience or education in a similar environment is an asset. For example:

Successful candidates must provide the following prior to completing the hiring process, issued within the last 12 months: If you don’t have these, our team will be happy to guide you through the process during the interview.

Valid CPR Level C certification

Standard Employment Hearing Assessment

Successful candidates will be asked to complete the following prior to becoming a Public Safety Communications Officer:

Successfully complete an aptitude test

Successfully complete paid internal training (6-8 weeks) including:
-
Emergency Medical Dispatcher Certification (EMD) course provided by the employer. Employee is responsible for maintaining certification every 2 years.
