Job Summary
The EMG Technician is responsible for performing nerve conduction studies (NCS) and assisting the physician during electromyography (EMG) examinations. The technician ensures accurate data collection, maintains patient comfort and safety, prepares equipment, and supports efficient clinic operations while adhering to infection prevention and quality assurance standards.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Welcome and prepare patients for EMG and nerve conduction studies.
- Explain procedures and answer basic patient questions.
- Verify patient identity and obtain relevant medical information.
- Position patients appropriately for testing while ensuring comfort and privacy.
- Monitor patients throughout the procedure and report any concerns to the physician.
Diagnostic Testing
- Perform nerve conduction studies (motor and sensory) as delegated by the supervising physician.
- Assist the physician during needle electromyography examinations.
- Accurately record and document test results.
- Ensure high-quality waveform acquisition and troubleshoot technical issues as needed.
- Recognize and report abnormal findings or technical difficulties to the physician.
Equipment & Quality Assurance
- Prepare, calibrate, and maintain EMG equipment according to manufacturer recommendations.
- Perform routine equipment quality control checks.
- Clean and disinfect equipment between patients according to infection prevention protocols.
- Maintain adequate inventory of electrodes, supplies, and consumables.
- Report equipment malfunctions promptly.
Documentation
- Complete accurate patient records and procedure documentation.
- Ensure reports are complete and available for physician interpretation.
- Maintain confidentiality in accordance with privacy legislation and clinic policies.
Infection Prevention & Safety
- Follow routine practices and additional precautions as appropriate.
- Adhere to medical device cleaning and disinfection procedures.
- Dispose of sharps and biomedical waste safely.
- Maintain a clean and organized examination room.
- Participate in emergency preparedness and workplace safety initiatives.
Administrative Duties
- Assist with appointment preparation and patient flow.
- Coordinate with physicians and administrative staff regarding scheduling and documentation.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and staff education as required.
Qualifications
- Completion of an accredited Electromyography (EMG) Technician or Neurodiagnostic Technology program, or equivalent education and experience.
- Certification in Electroneurodiagnostic Technology (e.g., CNCT or R.NCS.T.) is considered an asset.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification.
- Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and peripheral nervous system disorders.
- Proficiency with EMG/NCS equipment and electronic medical records.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary clinical environment.
Preferred Experience
- Previous experience performing nerve conduction studies in a neurology, physiatry, or pain medicine clinic.
- Experience with electronic medical records (EMR).
- Familiarity with infection prevention and control standards.
