Salary Range: $71,195 to $88,998 per annum
Status: Permanent Full-Time

University Health Network (UHN) is looking for an experienced professional to fill the key role of Safety Officer in our UHN Safety Services-Research Safety Department.

As an integral member of the UHN Safety Services–Research Safety department, the primary responsibilities of the Safety Officer are to support research and include: performing safety duties and coordinating projects under the direction of the Supervisor, Research Safety, and Director, UHN Safety Services; maintaining and coordinating safety programs; assisting with the development of safety literature/departmental process, personnel support, support for incident response/investigation; providing safety training, review of projects, area inspections/audit; coordinating multiple/simultaneous small scale projects for assigned groups; performing quality management responsibilities; performing data management/communication and administrative responsibilities; performing cross-functional and other duties consistent with the job classification as assigned and/or as requested.

Responsibilities:
Assists the Supervisor and Director with research safety programs including development and maintenance of safety literature, departmental process, safety project development/implementation, and accurate record keeping and data tracking.
Performs laboratory inspections and/or audit as per regulatory requirements (Public Health Agency of Canada, Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Occupational Health & Safety Act, etc.).
Oversees activities of consultants, contractors, sub-contractors or trades
Researches current safety literature and legislation and develops, maintains and updates training presentations and materials, subject to approval from the Supervisor and or Director.
Delivers safety training to research personnel and support personnel in large and small audiences or to individuals.
Conducts on-going evaluation of quality indicators to ensure the integrity and safety of projects/equipment and notify appropriate bodies of deficiencies/gaps.
Attends and actively participates in intra- and inter-departmental meetings, as required.

Qualifications

At minimum, completion of a bachelor’s degree in Sciences or recognized equivalent required
At minimum over 2 years up to and including 3 years practical and related experience, and/or 2 years on-the-job training required
Experience in relevant safety programs
Experience with Microsoft Access, Word, Excel, Powerpoint required

Vaccines (COVID-19 and others) are a requirement of the job unless you have an exemption on a medical ground pursuant to the Ontario Human Rights Code.
