About the Client:
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for an 84-year-old gentleman currently recovering at the Whitby Rehab Hospital on Gordon Street following knee replacement surgery. He lives independently in Ajax near Townline and Adelaide and will eventually return home. This is his second knee replacement, and while the surgery went well, recovery has been challenging. He's making progress but needs encouragement and support during this transition period.
Responsibilities:
While he's in the hospital, you'll provide companionship and engagement during 2-hour visits. Your role includes encouraging him to eat full meals (he sometimes needs reminders about protein intake), prompting him to complete his physiotherapy exercises, keeping him mentally engaged through conversation, helping him stay awake during the day to maintain a healthy sleep schedule, advocating for his needs with hospital staff when necessary, and assisting with tasks like filling out meal menus.
Once he transitions home, responsibilities will expand to include light housekeeping and laundry, helping him maintain his living space, continued encouragement with exercises and daily routines, and providing the same companionship and cognitive support he receives now.
What We're Looking For:
We need someone who genuinely engages rather than just occupying space. The ideal caregiver is warm and conversational, takes initiative without needing constant direction, communicates clearly with family, is reliable and consistent (same person each visit), advocates respectfully for the client's needs, and speaks English fluently. Experience with post-surgical recovery and working with seniors is valued. This family has worked with PSWs before and knows the difference between someone who cares and someone just going through motions.
Schedule:
Currently seeking 2-hour visits twice weekly (4 hours total per week) while he's in the hospital. This schedule will continue once he returns home, with potential for adjustment based on his needs and preferences. The family is looking for a long-term relationship with consistency being the top priority. Visits should be scheduled during daytime hours when he benefits most from engagement and activity.
