E-Learning and Teaching Specialist

Reporting to the Assistant Dean, International and Community Education in the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation, the E-Learning and Teaching Specialist is a project based position whose main responsibility is the creation of effective online learning tools and courses for the Faculty. The Faculty has developed two online graduate certificates that will benefit from this position. The Faculty will use this position to promote and implement online learning tools and courses throughout its programs.

Over the course of the 18 month tenure, this position will work with over 20 Faculty and ATS instructors and various staff on course development, evaluation tools and support and promotion of online teaching. The specialist will be required to work in a diverse and complex working environment and have the ability to communicate and gather information effectively and efficiently in a variety of situations.

This position will also work on projects directed by the Assistant Dean to design specific courses, degree programs, and/or professional development work for the Faculty.


The specialist is responsible developing interactive, engaging online courses, within the Sport and Recreation Management Graduate Certificate as well as other courses identified by the Assistant Dean.
The specialist will move a course from face-to-face delivery to online delivery using interactive learning objectives (ILOs), periodic formative feedbacks, interactive quizzes and other tools deemed appropriate and proven successful in an online learning environment.
The specialist will ensure that online courses reflect content accurately, is delivered in a pedagogically sound manner (particularly focused on adult learners) and provides appropriate evaluative tools. They will also be expected to create channels to ensure easy and ongoing maintenance of online courses and content.
The specialist will be expected to work closely with Faculty and instructors to support and increase instructor comfort and use of online teaching and maintenance of online course and tools. They will advise and assist Faculty and staff with evaluating or implementing online teaching tools and related academic technologies.
The specialist will design and deliver professional development opportunities (e.g. workshops) to Academic Staff with the expected outcome of enhancing the student learning experience. The specialist will work both autonomously and within a team environment when required in order to meet goals, objectives and deadlines.

Graduate degree or equivalent in instructional design, teaching and learning in higher education, educational technology, training and development, or a related field
Demonstrated competency in developing instructional material in various online formats (written, video, other)
Demonstrated experience in creating online learning courses
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Experience in teaching and leading workshops face-to-face and online
Experience with the development of instructional material in the context of professional development in higher education
Knowledge and competency in applying instructional design theories, learning theories and concepts of curriculum development
Knowledge of tools within learning management systems, popular usage, and functionalities
Knowledge about and experience in using educational technologies, in particular multimedia tools
The ability to work in a diverse environment, with diverse research areas, and teaching methods
Preference will be given to candidates who also have expertise in the following areas:

Adobe Creative Suite, audio and video editing, mark-up languages such as HTML and CSS
Learning Development Tools such as Articulate, Camtasia, Captivat, Presenter, etc.
Adobe Connect, E-portfolios, Moodle, Eclass, Google tools, student response systems
Assessment technologies
Mobile learning
In accordance with the Temporary Administrative and Professional Staff (TAPS) Agreement, this position is an appointment of 18 months and offers a comprehensive benefits package found at Faculty & Staff Benefits and annual salary range of $61,391 - $102,355.
