POSITION OVERVIEW
Join the City of Maple Ridge Recreation Services team as a Recreation Leader 4 and play a key role in creating fun, meaningful, and memorable experiences for children through quality licensed after-school and recreation programs. This exciting advanced front-line position is ideal for someone who is passionate about working with children and thrives in a leadership role within a dynamic team environment. As part of the licensed Active Kids Club and complex recreation programs, you will help shape each child’s day through engaging activities, positive mentorship, and a safe, welcoming space where children can learn, play, and belong.
In this lead role, you will be responsible for the day-to-day operation and successful delivery of programs, while directly facilitating activities, guiding participants, and serving as the lead instructor. You will also provide on-site supervision and support to Recreation Leaders, practicum students, and volunteers, helping to build a collaborative and enthusiastic team culture. While working within established policies and procedures and supervisor direction you will use sound judgement, independence, tact, and diplomacy in daily interactions with children, families, and staff, contributing to high-quality program experiences and strong community connections.

In This Role You Will:
- Directly facilitates, guides and acts as lead instructor for programs and activities in the areas of recreation and licensed programs and/or camps; assists with complex programming and the implementation for licensed child care, day camps, and youth leadership programming.
- Assesses program outcomes; implements minor improvements; and recommends changes to a superior as necessary.
- Provides on site supervision to supporting Recreation Leaders; and provides on site assistance and guidance for Access staff assisting children with extra support needs.
- Responds to immediate parent or participant feedback, initiates the review of causes and communicates outcomes to supervisor and to customer directly; communicates and follows up to outside agencies such as Public Health and the School District designates as it pertains to licensing requirements and program requirements as required.
- Monitors and corrects participant behavior and enforces rules and policy.
- Suggests changes to program procedures to a supervisor as it relates to the safety and experience of the program participant and implements changes once approved.
- Completes required documentation, incident reports, first aid occurrences, communication logs to immediate team and communication reports to supervisors as required.
- Performs some cleaning responsibilities for immediate program area, supplies and equipment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Sound knowledge of the fundamentals of program leadership and instruction for preschool, children, youth and adults.
Sound knowledge of the social, cultural and recreational needs and interests of preschool, children, youth and adults.
Sound knowledge of the rules, regulations, procedures and policies governing the work and of modern office methods and procedures.
Ability to participate in planning and implementing programs and activities and to provide leadership and instruction on same.
Ability to deal effectively with a variety of internal and external contacts.
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with program participants, parents and external agencies.
Ability to participate in supervision, recruitment and training of volunteers and subordinate Recreation Leader staff engaged in various recreational and social programs and activities.
Skill in the operation of equipment used in the work.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by post-secondary courses related to the work, plus some related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
REQUIRED LICENCES AND CERTIFICATES
Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia.
Standard First Aid and CPR – Level C.
HOURS OF WORK
This is an auxiliary position with no ongoing schedule of hours (Hours of work are governed by Schedule B (C, J) of the Collective Agreement alongside the Letter of Understanding for Workers in Children's/Youth Services and Recreation Access).
