Reporting to the Public Works Manager, the Maintenance Technician is responsible for supporting the operation, maintenance, repair, and improvement of Cheam First Nation's infrastructure, facilities, utility systems, public spaces, and community assets.
The position supports the delivery of reliable public works services through preventative maintenance, inspections, repairs, equipment operation, emergency response, and participation in asset management and infrastructure improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the operation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of community infrastructure, utility systems, roads, drainage systems, public facilities, and community assets to maintain safe, reliable, and functional community services.
- Perform maintenance, repair, and improvement activities for Band-owned facilities, buildings, and related infrastructure.
- Safely operate and maintain equipment, vehicles, machinery, and tools required to support public works operations, maintenance activities, and infrastructure projects.
- Conduct routine inspections of infrastructure, facilities, and equipment and identify maintenance requirements, deficiencies, and repair needs.
- Perform maintenance, repairs, inspections, and improvement activities for Band-owned housing and residential properties as assigned.
- Participate in infrastructure inspections, condition assessments, preventative maintenance programs, and capital improvement projects.
- Contribute to the implementation of Cheam First Nation's Asset Management Program through maintenance activities, inspections, documentation, and asset monitoring.
- Respond to infrastructure failures, utility disruptions, severe weather events, and other emergencies affecting community services and assets.
- Participate in emergency preparedness activities and after-hours emergency response as required.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection reports, work orders, equipment logs, and operational documentation.
- Provide information, recommendations, and observations regarding infrastructure, maintenance, and operational requirements.
- Collaborate with staff, contractors, service providers, and community members to support the effective delivery of public works services.
- Comply with all applicable legislation, regulations, policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
- Promote and maintain a safe work environment for employees, contractors, community members, and visitors.
- Perform other related duties consistent with the nature and scope of the position.
Experience & Qualifications
- Three to five years of experience in public works, infrastructure maintenance, construction, utilities, facility maintenance, equipment operations, or a related field.
- Experience working with community infrastructure, utilities, facilities, or municipal services is considered an asset.
- Experience working within a First Nation community is considered an asset.
- Heavy Equipment Operator Certificate or equivalent training.
- CSTS Certification or willingness to obtain.
- Occupational First Aid Level 1 or willingness to obtain.
- Ability to safely operate equipment, vehicles, machinery, and tools.
- Knowledge of public works operations, infrastructure maintenance, and equipment operation.
- Knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation, regulations, and safe work practices.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to prioritize work and respond effectively to changing operational demands.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and reports.
- Knowledge and respect for First Nations culture, traditions, and values.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Regular physical activity including lifting, carrying, bending, climbing, and operating equipment.
- Participation in emergency response, after-hours call-outs, and on-call duties may be required.
- Evening and weekend work may be required to meet operational needs.
