Position Title: Gwich’in Curriculum Coordinator

PURPOSE
The Gwich’in Curriculum Coordinator is a member of the Language Revitalization department responsible for coordinating the development, implementation, and evaluation of Gwich’in language curricula for Dinjii Zhuh language learners of all levels. The role supports the growth of language programs and the development of the Gwich’in immersion school curriculum to meet the current and future needs of Gwich’in Participants and the Gwich’in Tribal Council language department.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Coordinate the development of Gwich’in language learning curricula, strategies, guides, resources, and literature reviews.
- Develop advisory working groups composed of elders, fluent speakers, knowledge holders, and linguists to provide input and direction for curriculum development.
- Collaborate with the department to set priorities and develop annual work plans.
- Design and prepare language curricula and resources that accommodate diverse fluency levels.
- Work with language instructors and coordinators to design programs or classes tailored to learner needs and fluency levels.
- Works directly with the Manager on AOP projects to be completed each year.
- Collaborate with Child Care centers in GSA to develop resources development and services with Child Care centers staff.
- Develop policies, guidelines, programs of study, and best-practice documents to support the department and the broader Gwich’in community.
- Build effective relationships with key community partners to ensure curriculum development is informed by elders, language speakers, and the community.
- Help coordinate community and regional language workshops and gatherings to share strategies and encourage language learning.
- Support language instructors within and outside the formal education system to advance regional language education goals.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Post-secondary or university degree in Education, Indigenous Language Revitalization, Linguistics, or a related field.

Minimum of 2 years of related experience, including language maintenance and revitalization strategies, curriculum and material development, project management, program delivery, and mentoring staff.

Knowledge of second language acquisition, pedagogy, educational philosophies, theory, and instructional practices.
- Experience in curriculum development, design, and implementation.
- Knowledge of culture-based education and Indigenous educational philosophies.
- Familiarity with early learning, kindergarten, primary, and secondary education.
- Strong understanding of Indigenous language pedagogy and instructional practices.
- Excellent verbal and written communication, analytical, and leadership skills.
- Ability to travel to remote communities within the Gwich’in Settlement Area as required.
- Preferred knowledge of Gwich’in values, beliefs, and practices, and ability to integrate these into daily work.
- Fluency in the Gwich’in language is a strong asset.
