1. Develop and maintain WM Design Prototypes and Standards, including merchandising templates, operational workflow standards and architectural design and details. Influence and inspire merchants and other business partners to consider the latest in retail design. Effectively communicate all prototype, standards and template related changes to internal and external stakeholders using the Change Initiative Tool (CI). Present changes for approval to all levels within organization for approval with thorough presentations including change costs and ROI.
2. Key Format Development point person for all business units for new and updated design requirements and requests. Challenge business unit thinking with wholistic design perspective to produce most efficient department and building layouts. Collaborate with internal stakeholders to translate all business initiative concepts into prototype, standards and template updates by preparing detailed design documentation (incl. layout and architectural drawings) for use by internal and external stakeholders. Collaborate with Store Layout Managers and Design Execution Mangers to perform in-store tests and monitor results.

3. Responsible for continuous development of WM Design prototype, standards and templates to reflect cost savings, code requirements/compliance, innovation, and constructability. Responsible for development of all merchandising, operational and architectural details and partner with engineering to ensure civil, mechanical, refrigeration, electrical and structural details are updated to reflect initiative as part of overall retail store design. Ensure all WM designs are in line with National building code requirements. Partner with Facilities Maintenance to ensure FM programs are adjusted to suit changes to prototypes, standards and templates.
4. Develop and manage yearly Prototype and Standards budget. Manage external resources (Architects, Engineers, Consultants (incl. code consultants) to ensure accurate delivery of prototype, standards and template documents for use by internal and external stakeholders. Prepare Scope of Work documents to obtain fee and schedule as it relates to all prototype, standards and template work. Manger external consultant performance to ensure work is completed on time and on budget.
5. Format Development gatekeeper for all Supercentre Template update requests. Own and lead the WM Supercenter Template process and details through ongoing evolution of the latest business initiatives. Capture requirements from all cross-functional partners throughout the business and provide thorough recommendations that are representative of exceptional merchandising and operational design for inclusion in the Supercentre Template. Responsible for quarterly Supercentre Template Update including overall design, budgets to reflect design (developed in conjunction with construction, estimating and procurement) and have a deep understanding of ROI and financials related to new and updated design initiatives. Ensure budget templates are maintained to reflect most current Supercentre Template.
6. Conduct quarterly post-project reviews for continuous improvement of prototype, standards and templates. Consult with Store Layout Managers and Design Execution Managers as required to problem solve for unique store specific requirements.
7. Maintain library of all departments and variations of departments to suit template size (including merchandising, operation and building elements). Own prototype, standards, master specifications, change initiatives and all related CAD and REVIT files. Create REVIT families and maintain templates within REVIT platform. Build and maintain library structure. Develop and maintain architectural drawing standards and file naming conventions to be used by all internal and external consultants. Develop new processes to support updated WM and industry standards for retail store design (eg. Revit).
8. Drive retail store design innovation for Format Development. Research and present retail industry design best practices for merchandising, operations and architectural building innovation and new design initiatives. Partner with all WM innovation teams regularly to provide design consultation on behalf of Format Development. Present ideas and recommendations broadly throughout the organization to merchandising and operational leaders.
Qualifications:
Degree in Architecture or Engineering or Bachelor’s Degree
6-8 years of architectural experience – familiar with National and Provincial Building Codes, Municipal Building By-laws
Retail design or construction experience
Project or Construction management experience
Retail Merchandising or Retail Operations experience an asset
Strong communication skills
Excel at problem solving
Proficiency in AutoCAD and REVIT
