Empringham Disposal is growing, and we’re looking for an experienced 3rd/4th year Apprentice Heavy Equipment Mechanic (HET) to join our team. Position Summary
The 3rd/4th Year Apprentice Heavy Equipment Technician assists with inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a wide range of heavy-duty machinery used in construction, mining, forestry, and industrial operations. This role includes supporting the troubleshooting of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems; performing preventative maintenance; and participating in component repairs and rebuilds to ensure equipment meets safety and performance standards. The Apprentice interprets technical manuals, accurately documents work performed, and works closely with Journeyman technicians, operators, and supervisors to minimize downtime while continuing to develop technical skills and safe work practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with diagnosing and troubleshooting diesel, hydraulic, electrical, and related heavy equipment systems under the guidance of Journeyman technicians
- Perform routine and preventative maintenance, including inspections, lubrication, and fluid services
- Repair or replace worn or damaged components using appropriate tools and manufacturer guidelines
- Accurately document maintenance and repair work, including parts used and tasks completed
- Work collaboratively with technicians and operators to support efficient equipment operation and minimize downtime
- Follow all safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements while performing assigned tasks
- Participate in safety meetings, training sessions, and toolbox talks
- Report hazards, near misses, and incidents promptly in accordance with company procedures
- Ensure all assigned work is completed in compliance with applicable provincial and federal regulation
Education and Experience
- Registered as an Apprentice Heavy Equipment Technician with AIT or the applicable provincial authority.
- Strong mechanical aptitude with advanced knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and heavy equipment components, including diagnostics and repair
- Extensive hands-on experience using hand and power tools in heavy-duty and automotive repair environments
- Solid understanding of equipment maintenance practices, troubleshooting techniques, and industry repair standards
- Ability to perform physically demanding work, including heavy lifting and repetitive tasks in a field or shop environment
- Proven experience diagnosing and repairing hydraulic systems; experience with refuse or garbage collection equipment is considered an asset.

Working Conditions

- Steel toed boots are required. This is considered a safety-sensitive position.
