Why is this role important?

Our Customs Compliance and Global Trade Department navigates the ins and outs of product importation into Canada to minimize costs and risk to the Company. Analytical and practical solution-focused, this team plays a pivotal compliance role in importing our products into Canada for sale to our customers in the retail food, drug, general merchandise and apparel sectors.

The Opportunity

As the Customs Compliance and Global Trade Director, you will lead and motivate the team responsible for the seamless import and export of our products as well as managing government and regulatory compliance programs including external audits.

Your expertise is critical in building and managing Loblaw compliance strategy, policy and programs to minimize trade costs and ensure compliance with export and import laws and regulations.

The Job

As the Customs Compliance and Global Trade Director, you will be a technical genius, wise in the ways of Customs and experienced in bringing routine, discipline, precision and accuracy to a customs operation. You will also be an accomplished leader capable of fostering a collaborative team environment and bringing the out the best in people with a future forward thinking mindset.

You will:
Develop, continually improve internal Customs strategy, policies, processes and procedures
Proactively manage all government legislation and regulatory compliance program requirements of import and export of goods including government audits
Lead, motivate, coach, empower and develop a high performance forward thinking Customs compliance team
Have a strong understanding of customs regulations, valuation and classification in the food, drug and apparel sectors
Have excellent communication, interpersonal and leadership skills
Have strong technical knowledge of CBSA, CFIA, and OGD regulations, especially release, accounting, origin, HS, e-Manifest, import permit and certification requirements
Have acute understanding of CBSA current and future direction initiatives and impact on business
Strong business acumen with collaborative mindset as a valued partner to our business units
Ability to cultivate and maintain strong business relationships with many stakeholders (e.g. Procurement, Supply Chain, Merchandising, Finance) to secure cross functional cooperation
Lead and direct Special projects including RPA Automation initiatives, data analytics and use of technology, AI and machine learning in the Customs space
Create, implement, review and act upon KPI's supporting operations
Be results oriented with strong decision making capacities, problem solving and negotiating skills
Qualifications

The Customs and Global Trade Compliance Director has:
Valid CSC Designation, or CTCS, or Customs Brokers Professional License
University degree or College diploma in related discipline
Proven experience in International Trade Compliance and/or import & export activities
Minimum ten years in a Customs International Trade Compliance environment with at least five years managerial accountabilities leading a Customs department
Strong technical knowledge of Canada and US Customs, release, accounting, and compliance regulations
Retail experience within the food, drug, general merchandise and apparel sectors an asset
