Writer and Content Strategy Specialist

Duties and Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Director, Advancement Strategy and Brand, the incumbent is responsible for planning, developing, writing and executing innovative content and related strategies that advance university-generated knowledge and forward the goals of community liaison and a culture of philanthropy by engaging alumni, donors, friends, corporate and industry partners, and the broader community. Strategies and content are composed of various projects, including, but not limited to, position papers and presentations, progress reports and updates, stories and online content for Advancement’s web network, e-newsletters, social media, online and print marketing efforts, proposals, speeches and other material to highlight priority projects. The incumbent is responsible for assisting with other departmental projects as determined by the Director. It is essential that all communications materials are produced with the highest standards and convey consistent messaging, accuracy of information, quality of presentation and a common visual identity as they reflect the University’s reputation to its internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications:The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
  • Advanced writing and editorial skills
  • Superior interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to develop and implement innovative communications and marketing initiatives
  • A solid understanding of the university environment
  • Experience with principles of knowledge translation
  • Understanding of scientific research objectives and methodology
  • Strong supervisory, organizational and leadership skills
  • Ability to manage change effectively
  • Ability to work with alumni, faculty, staff, and donors to the University
  • Ability to motivate a team of volunteers, seeking their involvement and continued interest
  • Ability to work independently with a minimum amount of supervision
  • Frequent, mandatory overtime work required on weekends and weeknights (2-4 times/month); frequent, mandatory travel to alumni and corporate events (2-4 times/month)
  • Exceptional level of professional flexibility
Education and Experience:The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
  • Completion of an honours university degree (Journalism, Communications or English major preferred)
  • Five years of related work experience in project management, editing, writing and print communications and/or knowledge translation, preferably in a university setting
