The Platform Engineer will work within a team that is responsible for researching and developing new products and services to be sold to Syntax customers, as well as improving existing infrastructure and platforms for such products and services to be utilized. Solutions should be architected, designed, and documented in an efficient and highly supportable manner. The focus for the Platform Engineer will be around various OS platform architecture, but it is important the successful candidate has a wide understanding of all areas of IT architecture.
The Platform Engineer is responsible for proving and testing new products, detailing and documenting all things necessary for implementation, including ensuring proper security, maintainability, and knowledge transfer for operations and customer support. It will be necessary to determine all costing for the products and services developed are properly itemized and can be productized by the sales staff.
The Platform Engineer will work within a team, but will be expected to be self-sufficient, taking incentive to drive development through to completion. For product/infrastructure documentation, it will be expected to automate as much of the delivery aspects as possible. Syntax utilizes both SaltStack and Ansible in its environment for such implementations.
Assist with Pre-Sales Engineering for new and existing customers, including requirements gathering, feasibility and gap analysis, and solution development
Test new products or developments to ensure proper security and supportability
Automation of recurring tasks, limiting wasted effort and configuration drift
Develop technical blueprints, including the specification of landscape, network, server, virtualization, software installation, and procurement details for deployment projects
Consult by conducting research and providing advice on technical aspects of the hosting business to both Syntax internal staff and customers
Develop Syntax internal implementation projects comprised of technical infrastructure changes to our product platforms that benefit multiple customers, bundled with solution and operational deployment documentation to provide to Operational staff
Possess a firm understanding of capacity planning and device monitoring techniques
Mentor Operations team members on successfully completing newly implemented projects or tasks
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
5-10 years of IT Administration/Engineering experience. Expert level knowledge of operating systems, Windows, Linux (SUSE/RHEL), AIX
Excellent troubleshooting and performance tuning skills
Wide understanding of overall security concepts, e.g. authentication, authorization, defense in depth, OS hardening, etc.
Experience with configuration management and automation frameworks: SaltStack and Ansible
Experience with public cloud offerings: AWS and Azure focused.
Experience with IT infrastructure such as: Active Directory, DNS, IPS/IDS, etc.
Demonstrated experience with disaster recovery solutions
Understanding of storage concepts: SAN, NAS, CIFS, NFS, iSCSI
Understanding the technology role in solving business issues and improving ROI
Technical writing skills with the ability to produce technical documents, work instructions and system diagrams
Understanding of network technology concepts with vendor knowledge preferred, e.g. Cisco, Palo Alto, F5, etc.
Well-developed interpersonal skills with an ability to get along with diverse personalities and communicate with customers
