ABOUT SSCS:

Contribution:

The Behavioural Specialist assesses, plans, and implements behavioural interventions,

providing services to children involved in the Early Intervention program (ages 0-6). The

Behavioural Specialist works collaboratively with the Child Development Team, contributing

their expertise to coordinated planning, goal setting, and integrated supports. Grounded in

a family centered approach, they work in close partnership with caregivers ensuring that

familial priorities and perspectives inform the child’s care. The Behaviour Specialist

recognizes behaviour as a form of communication, and works through a neuro affirming

lens to engage children in developmentally appropriate, interest driven activities that

support learning, self-regulation, and skill development. As a knowledgeable and

dedicated professional, they are an essential member of the child’s support team.

Qualifications:

1. Master’s or Doctoral degree in Special Education, Educational Psychology,

Psychology, or other relevant health related discipline

a. Specialized clinical training in Positive Behaviour Support or Applied Behaviour

Analysis

2. A minimum of 2 years working in pediatrics

3. Previous experience working in rural, remote, or indigenous communities is an asset

4. Valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities:

A. Clinical

1. Completes intake, screening, informed consent, safety reviews and service

orientation activities in accordance with program requirements.

2. Conducts assessments and observations of children, gathers relevant history,

develops individualized treatment plans and strategies based on the child’s

requirements and the daily living environment. Provides ongoing support and

evaluation. Initiates or supports referrals for additional services from other

professionals.

3. Provides education and implements behavioural and therapeutic programs

using a coaching approach to increase participation at home and in the

community.

4. Uses a trauma Informed approach to deliver services.

5. Organizes and participates in team meetings/case reviews and individual

planning sessions for children.

6. Maintains open and positive communication with parents, requests input and

participation of parents in the development of the child’s programs. Meets with

parents regularly to discuss assessments and progress. Makes home visits. Assists

parents in advocating for programs and services they feel are in the best interest

of the child and their family.

7. Keeps current on developments in the field of paediatric behaviour and

participates actively in training opportunities on a regular basis or as is deemed

necessary.

8. Provides Clinical guidance, mentorship and supervision to Behaviour

Interventionists or Therapy Assistants as assigned.

B. Community

1. Participates as required in the transition process for children transferring to other

community programs to ensure a positive experience and continuity of service.

2. Liaises and works collaboratively with physicians, other professionals, therapists,

agencies and facilities including Ministry staff. Promotes a family centred

approach to case management. Promotes a well-coordinated team approach

to agency and inter-agency service delivery in the best interests of the family

and the community.

3. Participates in relevant committees, working groups, associations, etc. as

directed.

4. Provides information and education, individually or in group settings, to parents,

co-workers and the community.

C. Administrative

1. Maintains records, documentation and reporting as outlined in the Program

Operating Manual.

2. Assists the Child and Youth Development Manager/Director with maintenance

and revision of the Program Operating Manual.

3. Other related duties as required.

Plan with a matching contribution by SSCS.
