About Us

The Correctional Services division of the Department of Justice is responsible for the administration and operation of community and custody-based programs and services for adult offenders and young persons.

Within the Correctional Services core business area there are two programs: community corrections & correctional facilities. Each of these program areas is broken down into closely related activities that have a specific impact on the program's target group.

About Our Opportunity

The Secretary 2 is responsible for providing secretarial, reception and administrative support based on the operational requirements primarily in the Sydney Corrections office. The office will depend on your talents to coordinate correspondence and schedules pertaining to Probation Officers’ appointments and programs, as well as maintaining physical and electronic files and follow-up systems.

In this role, you will support daily operations by editing confidential investigative reports, evaluations, correspondence, file documentation, court documents and forms, often from dicta-phone or digital recording. You will provide telephone and reception services including ongoing contact with representatives of the Court, Public Prosecution, Policing Services and community partners. Other duties include disbursements pertaining to financial matters, mail sorting and distribution, management of supplies and inventory, and statistical submissions.

About You

A one year secretarial or commercial course supplemented by three years of secretarial experience is required. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.

As the successful candidate, you will be proficient in dicta-typing or digital recordings, word processing applications and other standard computer applications; this must be indicated on your resume. Your knowledge of the Justice Enterprise Information Network (JEIN), court procedures and correctional services would be considered an asset. This position may require you to work at various work site location in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.

Our Secretary 2 will demonstrate sound judgement, initiative and tact in dealing with a variety of people, as well as good organizational skills. Your ability to maintain confidentiality is essential in this role.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Pay Grade: CL 18

Salary Range: $1,510.00 - $1,689.00 Bi-Weekly

This is a bargaining unit position initially restricted to current civil service employees represented by the Nova Scotia Government Employees Union (NSGEU).
